Eh, that wasn't so bad. We've had spammers get 250 posts before we got them. Thanks. You can now return to your regularly scheduled program. :)

This guy is well known as 'The Shoe guy'.

He's a search engine optimisation guy and is trying to get his sports footwear site ranking high on Google. He posts up on forums which have plenty of Google Juice in the hope that mods miss them and they stay. In many cases that happens. Personally, if I were him, I'd be a lot more subtle about it. Anchor text in sig, or write a post about harp and throw in a comment how I bought some new Nikes or something. Most mods would miss something like that, passing it off as a little strange, but let the post stand.

I have wondered about forum sigs here. Many people have achor text links to their sites which obviously increases their position on Google due to MBH being so highly ranked. What about non related anchor text links? I sell radiators. Can I put an anchor text link in my sig? Not that I would, but does MBH have clearly defined rules on this?

You can have whatever you want in your signature or your user profile, but of course if your every post was a radiator ad that had zero to do with the topic being discussed, well, that wouldn't be right.

Hey Todd,

Thanks for the reply. Don't worry, I'm going to put anchor text here to my business. Not my style. If I was that kind of guy I would've just done it and not bothered to write this. What I'm saying is that it might be an idea to put something in the terms of use that links are permitted only if they are relevant to harmonicas or the subject being discussed and any deviation from this would result in the post being removed and / or other punitive measures.

Most (in fact all) spammers are chancers who will only post up if they think there's a chance of success that their post will stand. If they think it's going to be a waste of time, they won't bother. The Shoe Guy is persistent as has been around the web for years. He's tried flat out spam and failed. Expect him to re register and do something more subtle that you may miss.

Good links are good and is probably why this place ranks so well. The harmonica community is a very giving, sharing community and links are shared in the very spirit Google intended them. Bad links are bad. I don't think it would be possible to drag this site down with them, but if the Shoe Guy succeeds in getting a few links past you, next thing will be the porn / Viagra / nasty crowd.

Sorry for the long post. I hope I'm being helpful.

Cheers

Steve

Yeah, there are ways around are best efforts. Spam links are annoying, but what's really annoying is how they pull 3 year old threads up (well, occasionally that's fun) and bury current threads. Spammers are like a poorly evolved parasite. They provoke a violent response from the host which results in their demise. A more evolved parasite would manage to function in a way that didn't disrupt the ecosystem enough to provoke a response. There are ways they could do that. I won't list them here so I don't give them any ideas. You'd think spammers would have blacklists though, sort of the reverse of spam lists, that would let them know to skip sites that will diligently take down their posts. It would save them some time. I suspect there is a disconnect between the people (or bots) spamming and people pulling the strings. I wonder sometimes if they know when the search engine crawlers are coming through to index things. Unless they time it just perfectly they don't get much to show for their effort on sites that remove their posts. Or maybe it's just bots.

I throw this question out there to members... are any of you posting from servers in China? I have yet to approve an application from China that didn't end up being a spammer. I'd hate to live in China and try to post on forums legitimately. It sets off all the warning bells; They are the Nigeria of forum spam. Aside from being annoying to forums they are ruining it for anyone over there who might actually want to participate in the world wide web.

Oh well. Maybe Chinese officials will figure that out. Or maybe that's just another way to keep people behind the Great Internet Wall.
