Had the opportunity to sit in for one song with one of my favorite local bands Friday evening. A local videographer was there and recorded the song, just posting it on YouTube. The song moves right along...

It was a lot of fun. It is usually great fun to back up the female vocalist Dawna Nelson, who can be heard singing another song "Romance Without Finance" on the champaignunderground channel. This time there was a guest guitar player, so I didn't have the opportunity to back her on harp. The slower songs give an opportunity to play more expressively.

It seems that most of the songs I have played that are on video tend to be fast ones.

Nice fast phrasing and turn around Doug, good stuff.

I missed you playing behind after your solo

The "stage" at Huber's is very tight. I cleared out of the way to not block the 1st guitar soloist being videoed, and left the mic I had used, Bruiser's mic (second guitar solo).

I did play some during the 2nd guitar solo, but really didn't want to step on the solo, and stayed back from Dawna's mic. The singer's mic on the left was not set as hot as the one I had soloed on, so my comping was not heard.

If someone is soloing I would rather not be heard than to detract from their solo.

I've heard of this band...I'm a stone's throw from Champaign over in Springfield. Are you nearby Doug?

I'm in Urbana, which is connected to Champaign with the University of Illinois in the middle. That is why I have come to know and have been able to sit in with Kilborn Alley, The Blues Deacons, the Sugar Prophets, and other local bands. This has helped keep my ears big when not playing with my own bands, which have seldom played lately. I have been around the scene long enough and earned a decent reputation, so I am often asked to sit in for a song or two, or sometimes a set or more.
