If your in Sydney google up "Sydney Blues Society inc", you can see what gig's etc are happening, contacts etc, S.S...Also i believe one of our members of this forum
'Cristal Lecter' is living somewhere in Oz or on a working holiday, go back about 4-5 pages and you may get a better idea if you contact her through her website.

There are several members from Australia on the forum, including some pretty regular posters. Cristal Lecter is Christelle Berthon. She just moved to Australia from France. Looking down the list of where people are there are a bunch of harpers down under. I'm sure some of them will check in to give you the downlow.

Hey harponica, I live north of Sydney a tad, and whilst around here (Central Coast- only 2hrs north) you could get gigs by trying, Sydney is your best bet! BBRay could be the man but I think he's in the middle of something and is not currently too active on the forum.
Whereabouts are you headed, and do you have contacts?

Hi harponica. Big Blind Ray has recently created a Facebook group, called Australian Harmonica Players which aims to be a networking tool for harp players Down Under. Warning. If you are here for a year, you might just like it too much and move down permanently...

Hi MBHers.

Apologies in advance for cross promotion in this post - I hope it does not present a conflict of interest.

@harponica - feel free to send a request to join the Autralian Harmonica Player Network @ https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/187516087987992/

It's a good way for the Oz players to share all sorts of harp related stuff on the web and its a bit of a small scene here so ideally building a good rapport and friendship with other Oz players will help you with your journey to the wonderful land of Oz(?)

@rubes - I tend to be more of a fourm "reeder" (heh - get it?) and less of a forum poster currently. This interwebs thingy tends to pull me into a vortex of inactivity and procrastination ..oh...look! another sweet internet meme!...er...hold on...

Back to work Ray....

Mackay is on the Qld tropical coast. I went through there a few weeks back but didn't check up on the blues scene. It's a lovely modern city & is close by to some fabulous places eg The Whitsundays & Islands of the Great Barrier Reef, Cape Hillsborough National Park (fantastic coastline) & the Pioneer Valley & Eungella National Park. It's a tourist mecca but the downside is it is approaching our wet season and the region frequently gets hammered with storms and cyclones.

With the population + tourists there are pubs and clubs that are sure to offer music opportunities but I would imagine it would be more likely to be country or rock? The Mackay region is booming due to growth in demand for our resources.

If you join the Facebook Aussie Harp Players Network there are sure to be folks who know folks that will be able to assist you.

One thing is certain that you will love the region ie you could not pick a better spot to spend a year or a lifetime. Winter is best time ie dry & warm as opposed to Summer being hot, humid and wet. Not many crocodiles there but there are nasties that are in the water during Summer ie deadly marine stingers (tiny jellyfish). Swimmers wear stinger suits in the water ie neck to ankle tights!

You probably can if you're really keen, but for me it's currently more economical to buy gear from the US. Although amps this way mean big $hipping costs... Best to bring stuff with you, pick up what you need beforehand maybe??

PS, I'm still waiting on a FEW things from there actually! Wouldn't want to drop by Harrison Harmonicas and pick up my B-rad would you......
