In the "Full Moon" thread Adam mentioned nutritional science and some of the problems with it. That struck a cord with me and it is something that at times makes me want to bang my head on a wall! In the U.S. it is maddening. "Wow, broccoli seems to be very good for you. It must be the Vitamin X. Let's extract it and make a supplement out of it (a pill)." Yea, that doesn't work dummy. You need the whole broccoli with all of it's nutrients etc working together to perform its magic. You can't separate things into separate elements and think it will work. Duh.

But I am getting away from my point. Well, actually I have many, this is just the latest. The other day on the news they said that the U.S. government is up in arms over the fact that every 7 seconds someone is dying from diabetes. They are looking to find ways to now promote even more exercise. The government is looking to step in. Say what? Are they serious? Who do they think caused this? More exercise? "Exercise" is only needed because we are in such bad health due to faulty government food guidelines. Simply walking and staying mobile is usually enough if you eat right. We need to sweat and burn calories only because they made us fat! And they are blaming us?

There are two things in food that we consume. Fat and carbs. Remove one and you are left with the other obviously. So in this country the big thing is low fat and non fat. They keep making these ready made lazy person meals (people can't cook anymore) created in a lab somewhere and it is devoid of fat or very low fat. So now we are left with carbs, which is basically sugar (when consumed in excess). That starts the need for more exercise, to burn the extra fuel. Add to that all the added sugar in the way of corn sugars (as well as plain sugar) and we are in worse shape. The government subsidizes these corn growers. More sugar for us, it's in everything. So, we have no fat in our food (something we actually need) which leaves us with only carbs and sugar. Too much fuel for us to burn. So our bodies turn it all to fat by way of triglycerides and we are screwed. I'm not a scientist or a nutritional, and know little about all the ins and outs. What I wrote may have some points that are a bit off, but the basics are there.
We are over carbed/sugared. They did it and won't admit it. Less fat=more carbs which leads to more need to burn the energy. Eat natural, stay active...the better choice. If it has an ingredient label on it throw it in the trash. It isn't food, it's a "food like substance."

Ok....rant over.

yep. it is a government plot to join planet fitness, which, with the dues, is how the government plans to eventually balance the budget.
and to think i've been wearing the tin foil hat to keep them out of my brain.
you gotta lay off the wake-n-bake. its making you a bit paranoid.

LOL...well, I'm not suggesting any government plot but come on now it's not that difficult to figure out. How can they force feed all this sugar and carbohydrates into us then wonder why we are getting fat? They can't be that dumb, they have to know. I'm just shocked that they seem so surprised at the rise in diabetes. I mean c'mon now. They can't be that stupid.

Nutritional science, most of it is a joke...

Eating low fat and non fat is about the best way to poor health and/or an early death. This idea that fat kills is based on the lipid hypothesis developed in the 1850's. A study in the 1950's lead researches to the "modern version of the lipid hypo" and concluded that saturated fats and cholesterol in the blood are the cause of heart disease. And to this day the scientific consensus of this remains. This is backed by various studies and what not. Problem is the lipid hypo is total bullshit. And the methods used in most of these studies to support this hypothesis are bullshit.

Exactly, shbamac. Good old Ancel keys. But that's a whole other story. However, a close look at the numbers will show how many people with good Cholesterol numbers have had heart attacks (myself included) while others with numbers sky high live forever. The science is sketchy.
When they test saturated fat against low fat foods, rather than take a nice piece of grass fed beef as their fat source they use a Pizza Hut pizza with everything on it or a double whopper from BK. Of course their comparisons are wrong. The test is skewed. Those are Frankenfoods...lol

More exercise, fewer empty calories. If you sit in an office chair all day drinking soda or coffee with cream and sugar you (myself included) only have yourself to blame. Most people who get as much exercise as a worker would have 100 years ago are in pretty good shape.

.....Tommy the Hat: don't forget that there is a third basic element in food - protein (tmf714 mentioned amino acids but didn't emphasize the word "protein")

I have been following a "paleo" or "primal" diet; food available to mankind in 8000 B.C. It is what we are evolved to eat. It includes most foods that primitive man would have noticed and used; meat, fruits, vegetables, nuts. It doesn't include agricultural products or roots (wheat, potato, etc.)

Tommy the hat: This book makes the same point you make

Basically, food is food. Food-like-substances are not food. Don't go shopping for vitamins and essential amino acids, go shopping for food!

"Eat food, mostly plants. Not too much."

Mercedes: The "Paleo" diet is ridiculous. What people ate during that period of time was extremely diverse and depended on so many factors. To say they only ate meat and a few other things is wrong. We evolved to be omnivores - we can eat anything.

I'm familiar with Paleo as well as Micheal Pollan's book and others. There is much I can agree with as well as disagree but this isn't the place. It is too in depth and I didn't start this thread for debate. I was just ranting lol. I went Paleo for awhile and my ratio (cholesterol) was great My Triglycerides were low and my HDL was very high. But I have been into health for many years and my numbers were (and are) also just as good, but with a lower total on my own eating habits. I do eat rice (brown) and lots of sweet potatoes. I also eat bread but only 2 slices per day and it's low sodium and sprouted grain. I don't eat any sugar and no artificial sweeteners. But I Soak my rice and oats (like you would with beans) in an acid medium. I eat grass fed beef once per week and I also eat free range chickens bought at the farm. I don't eat soy unless it's fermented. Tempeh and Natto and only on occasion. I drink whole milk but I get it from the farm raw, not pasteurized or homogenized. My eggs come from there also. The chickens are running around at my feet. they eat worms and bugs, not the vegetarian diets promoted these days by Perdue and such. Who ever heard of a bird that doesn't eat worms?...lol I don't eat anything processed.
But this nutrition stuff is a can of worms and much of it has to do with money I think. There is much that is not mentioned to the public but can be found if you do the research.

Ever look into how orange juice is made? How about skimmed milk? The FDA says they don't have to include all the ingredients on their list...like the powdered milk they add to give it more body. The cholesterol in that stuff is oxidized.

Like I said, this gets too deep. I didn't mean to get this into it here. There are too many ins and outs as well as differing opinions. Everything in moderation I guess. But knowledge helps. There's a lot of bad information being fed to us.

I sit in an office chair all day and think its really important to exercise and eat well.

Everything in moderation. If you eat more calories than you burn your gona get fat period.

I watch so many people in work start the job and within 6 months most of them have put on a couple of stone from eating crappy dinners or raiding the vending machine.

I try to think of food as fuel only and try not to eat much rubbish.

Peoples bodys respond best to natural foods not microwave rubbish full of salt and crap.

I try to eat lots of wholegrain patsa and rice, lots of vegatables and chicken(not fried though, lol)

And i try to get an hour or exercise four days a week.

Im currently doing the Insanity workout. Its a tough workout but i feel good for doing it.

Sometimes its really hard to come home after work and get motivated to exercise but once ive done it i feel much better.

Another think you get from exercise is good mental health. its not just about your body but your mind aswell. I can cope alot better with my problems if ive been exercising. Once those endorphines have been released i see things alot clearer.

We should all be raising that heart rate for at least half an hour everyday if not more than that.

We are not built to just to sit in front of computers all day or drive everywhere :o)

Don't forget minerals. Your vitamins in your food don't
work right without enough minerals. Most agriculture has
farmed out the trace minerals and not replaced them.
Most vitamins have maybe 7 minerals. Animal livestock
get 30 or more minerals. Makes you wonder.LOL
The guy that started organic gardening Rodeo Press
did an experiment with remineralized soil in raised
beds. He had a control group that wasn't remineralized.
He invited the agriculture dept. to check out his
results. They didn't expect much. They left shaking
their heads at the remarkable results.

Matthew, if I may, you seem like an intelligent individual. I don't you or your back ground but clearly by the questions you have posed to me it tells me you have a lot to learn. I apologize in advance if you take offense to this. Was never my intention.
