I have a friend who has very generously hooked me up with SWEET posters for my band Groove Stew. However, I stumbled upon some solo gigs recently and want something different. My friend, who does graphic design for a career, is unfortunately not going to be able to help me out in the near future.
I know nothing about graphic design. Zero. I mean like nothing. Anyone know of any good resources?
I have an idea of what I want, at least the start of one, but no way of doing it myself.
Thanks! ---------- Mike Quicksilver Custom Harmonicas

Depending on how involved you want to get you can use anything from programs like Microsoft Word to advanced art programs. What exactly are you looking for? I used to use a free program called GIMP for all my art projects. It's interface is a little wonky but it's pretty powerful. It's not the most intuitive program.

I don't know what I need...
I just need a "solo" poster. I love my Groove Stew stuff, but it will be confusing if I use that.
I had a few ideas:
Something with a laughing Buddha on it...
Something with me as a drawing/cartoon in a sort of throwing a punch at you pose holding a harp in my fist and mic in the back hand...
Something else fun/funny/light hearted related to the harmonica, a Buddha, or a ghost
I did find a cool "wallpaper" and opened it in Gimp. I managed to find a way to add text, but I am unsure if it would print as a good looking colored poster on regular 8 1/2 x 11 paper.
I can sketch/scan what I want, but I have no talent for this stuff. I'd rather it be kinda like artwork or a fun cartoony thing than have a bunch of pics of me on it, etc.
I have an immediate need as I have a gig October 8, but then won't need a solo poster again until November.
It might be kind of bad@$$ to have the 2nd one. I actually saw a kids shirt at Target today that had a cartoon monkey in the exact pose...was pretty cool. ---------- Mike Quicksilver Custom Harmonicas

I've used the gimp for years, but Inkscape is better suited for a poster. Gimp works of bitmap images, whereas Inkscape makes scalable graphics which are better suited for posters and other printing uses.
There is a learning curve to using it.
Mike, if you can find any images to work with in SVG format, you are good to go. They can be worked and reworked very easily and with high quality.

Just a ten minute example of what you can work with using Inkscape. Made with Inkscape by googling for buddha and harmonica SVG files:
