I play out with Fender Pro Junior with BillM mods I installed.
BillM
Lately I've had success placing the amp just in front of vocal monitors, leaning back into a dairy crate, pointing at an angle toward the ceiling over the audience.
The little amp (15W) covers the smaller rooms well, gives me plenty of monitor, and doesn't feedback.
Amp behind me usually gets feedback. Placed beside me is good, but rarely have enough space for that.
When I know I'll be in the mains, I lean the amp back at an angle into a milk crate, but facing me as a monitor.

RE: amp as monitor
This pretty much is what I do all the time. The amp I use doesn't have a speaker driven output jack on it, so I mic it through the PA. But I have the amp about six feet behind me usually. Gives enough space that feedback usually isn't an issue. And I usually stack it on top of the toolbox I carry my cables and adapters in so it carries a little further for my own beter hearing. ----------
