OK I'm going nuts, here.
How do I keep the slide return spring in place while I fix the reed plates on the comb?
Super 64 Chromonica
thanks anyone.

It's a two person job!
Just what state of disassembly is your harp in? If you are doing the reed work with the covers on maybe you could use a fat rubber band? A thin one would probably roll off (the button on my chromatic is slightly rounded). If you are doing individual reed work with the whole thing open could you just take the spring out and move the slide manually either direction, then put the spring back in when you are finished?
Take these ideas with a grain of salt. I've never taken a chromatic apart. I'm just brainstorming.

Hmm... thanks.
Covers off. Mouthpiece and slide on. Just checking valves for a student. Ready to put covers back on (with the spring) ---------- Robert Hale Learn Harmonica via Webcam Low Rates, High Results DUKEofWAIL.com DUKEofWAIL YouTube

SOLUTION remove mouthpiece and slide to release extra pull on spring. Replace spring, reed plates and covers. Replace mouthpiece and slide assembly.
Success. ---------- Robert Hale Learn Harmonica via Webcam Low Rates, High Results DUKEofWAIL.com DUKEofWAIL YouTube

You figured it out.
I would not take off chromatic reed plates without first taking off the mouthpiece. 1st off, last on. Also, whenever possible, I try to avoid taking off the reed plates on a chromatic. Sometimes, though, you have to do it, like with a windsaver problem.
If the windsaver is buzzing, try warming the harp before playing. Also, there are all kinds of solutions on Slidemeister, including valve replacements and mods, with helpful chromatic tech people. ----------
