I always thought they looked like a gimmick, but it's a matter of taste.
I prefer a case with about 25 harps in it, and a light. I wouldn't want to wear a belt with that many harps in it.

My tip is to take the damn thing off every now and then - Sugar Blue is NOT going to be winning any fashion prizes very soon!

I've pretty much always used a belt. I used a Hohner six-harp belt at first, now I have a Seydel 8-harp Smartbelt, and a single Hohner belt pouch on the opposite side of the main belt.

I really don't get why everyone is so against using belts. As long as you wear a shirt or jacket to cover it up, you're not breaking any fashion laws.

Little Bubba, in my eyes it's not so much a matter of taste as it is a matter of practicality depending on your playing style. I bounce around on stage quite a bit, and we end and start our numbers without much lapse time, so having the harps on my waist makes more sense to me than having to return to my case which I don't really have room for a lot of the time on stage.

I like that 5 or 6 harp case that slips through your belt loops (I think?). I don't have one but I want one, haha. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I have a harmonica case but so many times at SPAH or open mic nights I don't feel like dragging along everything.

Just look on any of the harp suppliers websites. Most of them supply them as do some of the custom harmonica case makers. Remember Google is your friend. Just type in harmonica belts, harmonica cases or harmonica holsters and you'll find them.

I have a Hohner 6 harp belt that I was glad I had last night. It was an outdoor gig and I didn't really have a place to keep my case with all that goes with it. The keyboardist who was calling the shots on what key when was all over the place. So I liked having my weapons right there in easy reach.

As mentioned before, take it off during break so you don't look like a poser.

Just got a hohner 7 harp gig case, and thought it was pretty cool, stashed my harps in it straight away, but when I went to my gig and started to play, my harps had a horrendous toxic plastic stink that nearly made me choke. I'll be leaving it out in the sun to air for a week or two before any harps go back in it.

I have a short red headed girl that holds my harps. Three in each hand, five in her pants and one in her cleavage. Works out real nice...

I couldn't find a harp belt I liked, so I made my own: (I keep the belt in the Smith & Wesson case.)

EDIT
I tried about six times to post the following in its own post, but it kept saying the spam code was wrong. So I'm posting it here:

On the belt I made, there are four compartments, each holds four harps. The flap is held down with rare earth magnets. I can make them in many different types of configurations., with many different types of graphics. Would that be something anyone here would be interested in buying?

Here's a case I made for Adam a couple of years ago. It's lined with spanish cedar for a good aroma, and the harps are held in place with rare earth magnets. The case itself is maple with rosewood veneer.

My buddy Bill Robinson built his belt out of a guitar strap and some tight weave nylon strap material to make the pouches.

I myself have an old western style gunbelt with the holster still attached. I may modify this to carry harps and maybe use the holster to hold a mic of some sort.

Shabamac,

I bet the 4-5 head-shake works very well on the harp in the cleavage....

Philosofy...cool belt. Better than Batmans utility belt. The case is a beautiful piece of work also. The GM handle is a nice touch.

Hawkeye...I like the gunbelt idea. I often refer to my harps as my weapon of choice. And when I have one with me, which is almost always, I consider myself "armed and dangerous". Using the holster as a mic holder is a great idea. I did an out door gig last Friday, and a few times I needed to free up my hands for a few moments. With no good place to put the mic, I had to lay it down. A holster would have been ideal.

There was a Brazilian company a while back called jackivelo. They actually made a twelve harp foldover belt that doubled as a carrying case, and a couple of belt holsters specifically designed for Green Bullets and JT30s. I think they were marketed mainly for guitarists who also played harp on stage so that you could let your guitar hang slack on the strap and then grab your harp and bullet up from the hip. I tried getting a belt, but they never emailed me back. Now I'm pretty sure their site is defunct.

@Hawkeyekane: your system might be less visually obtrusive than constantly goin' back to the case. Everybody has different needs, but I've always felt Rod Piazza's harp management on stage to be a little distracting to me; linin' up harps aheada time on his wife's piano top, esp. on tunes where he switches harps. But, some of this stuff, there's just no gettin' around.

One of the reasons I like straight setlists is 'cuz it helps me get to the right harp fast without lookin' like I'm diggin' in the cupboards.

Also, I guess a guy could load a belt with the common keys, and have a case layin' around for when the playlist changes.

Belts? At the risk of being Jimi Lee like,
I think they look dumb shit.
Just me though.
I'm making progress with MB upgrades and my vintage
tweed case is great, so far.

@2chops

Not tooting my own horn, but believe it or not, I actually get complimented on my belt a lot of the time by folks in the crowd. Couple of girls at one gig actually thought it was sexy the way I lifted my shirt to grab a harp. (I don't know how much they'd had to drink though. ;-)) At one time I was thinking of asking my wife to make a Popper-esque over the shoulder ammo bandelier type of thing, but then I realized I'd look like Chewie from Star Wars with that.

If I lifted my shirt to grab a harp, I might get harpooned. :)
