So, I just got my upper right wisdom tooth pulled yesterday. No big deal. Local anesthetic, came right out, still a little bleeding, but it's clearing up. But as a harp player, this can complicate things obviously. I have two gigs this weekend, for which my oral surgeon said I should be fine for. I was really hoping to hit an open jam tonight though to get some practice in. My surgeon recommended against it this soon, and I think I'm gonna take his advice. Any you folks have any words of wisdom or advice on this matter?

Yes-HEED HIS ADVICE! I had mine out years ago, and one of the holes developed 'dry socket', which is essentially an exposed nerve and hurts bad. Let it heal! ---------- Todd L. Greene

Well, the cut tissue needs to close up the holes where the teeth were and heal over. The pressure made by playing harp could easily damage the fragile condition your mouth is in. ---------- Todd L. Greene

Well, thats the good news. He was able to pull the sucker straight out. No cuts were necessary. As I'm writing this, I'm actually biting down on a wet tea bag, because i hear this helps coagulate the blood. ---------- I entertain By bringing a tone to your brain Just like a west bound train You wanna know my name? i had 2 wisdoms out some years ago on a friday and gigged the next night. i didn't practice before hand. you do what you know and that's it. i did keep the gauze packing in place throughout the day saturday and through the gig saturday night. i watched for bleeding- there was none. i was wary of pain and had painkillers handy. there was none. only drawback was i could not sing during he gig. but i made it through no worries, had a good time, got paid. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene

I got all four of mine cut out and was eating pizza later that day. I did the tea bag thing too. Lucky me I guess. Dry socket is nothing to eff with though. Take it easy and have fun at the gigs. ---------- Brad

Miles, I dunno if it's an old wives' tale remedy or not. My boss at work recommended it to me. Surprisingly enough, even though it tasted nasty as hell with a wet Benner black pekoe teabag in my mouth, it actually did help slow the bleed! ----------

On a similar note, does anyone know if having your tonsils removed would affect your ability to produce the throat vibrato? Would it change your tone in general?

@ Todd
I really don't know as I've never mastered throat vibrato. But if I had to guess...using an automotive analogy here...when you do anything to the front end of your car...lowering or raising the suspension, putting new tires on, recalibrating the steering system...you usually wanna get an alignment job done soon after. In this way, you may have to alter how you do throat vibrato and tone control. Just a guess on my part though. ----------

@ TP, I'm one of those aging Tonsil-Hoarders myself, and I've pondered the effect a tonsillectomy might have on singing voice, but not that. I might be incorrect, but throat vibrato(mine, anyway)seems to be more driven by the uvula than the region where the tonsils reside. ---------- Todd L. Greene

That's a technique I really need to work on. For the most part, my vibrato is controlled by my tongue and my diaphragm.

I started a thread similar to this a few weeks ago after haveing a molar pulled. I had to lay off a full week to get things to heal after not waitning long enough for it to heal right the first time.
Do what the doc says. I did not keep gause on it after the bleeding stopped. I may still have a leak from the missiing tooth to the sinus. At least it doesn't hurt now. So be careful. ---------- The WV State Harmonica Championship at The Diamond Teeth Mary Blues Festival Aug 27th & 28th 2011, Huntington,WV

Advice? Lip purse, lol!
Not quite as facetious as it sounds, though!
I only do diaphragm vibrato, so if I ever have a diaphragmectomy, I'll be in trouble! ----------
