I think I can play all 12 keys in major and minor with 6 harps assuming I can play 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 11th, and 12th.

Harps would be C, G, D, A, F#, and Bb. My small cases hold 7, so I would bring a low F too. I also think I have all the ecessary harps to play blues in all the standard keys using 2nd or 3rd position.

Anyone want to check my work, lol. -----

C, C#, Bb, B, A

The rest of the keys are useless. TrueChromatic tuning.

I agree with Jim. I had a similar thread a while back. I was thinking 4 was what you needed, BUT I mapped it out and 5 is correct

In 1st, 2nd 12th

A E D
Bd F Ed
B F# E
C G F
C# Ad F#

That covers them all. Note that in the example E, F and F# can be done with a choice of 2 harps. that's 12 keys, plus 3 duplicates = 15, which equals 5 harps times 3 keys = 15.

now it would be a nice math problem to prove that 4 harps cannot do all 12 keys....

If I bring 6 harps, I don't have to relearn anyting, lol. I was checking what I'd get for just 2nd and third and I. Was looking good.

OK, 4 keys CAN be enough

1st, 2nd, 12th

A E D
D# G# A#
F# C# B
C F G

BUT, I do not think I would enjoy using those harps in that combo

I mean for real, they are useless... LF is the same as C for example - with 2 extra holes at the bottom and 2 holes missing at the top.

Mikey,

I've got one of those Buckeye leather 6 harp bi-fold pouches for my flyaway kit (overseas traveling, helicopter, motorcycle etc). I carry C, G, D, A, F, and Bb.

Mathematically (and condescendingly), I'm sure somebody with better theory under their belt can abbreviate this.

I've never had any issues making something passable happen.

As usual, your mileage may vary

Fwiw, in my example I was trying to nail down the major and minor pentatonic of each key with harps that made major, minor, and blues easily accessible.

I can play in all 12 keys on one harp, but not fluently in all positions. However, just because one can play in all 12 keys on one harmonica, or on 4 or 5, doesn't mean that this would always be the preferred method. I switch around depending on the song to be able to express certain notes the way i want to. Hope that makes sense. For example, just because I could play Amazing Grace in 7th position on a C harmonica doesn't mean I would choose to. It just doesn't sound as pretty to me, no matter how smooth the overblows are.

Right, but my reason for posting this is more about a grab and go
situation. Maybe you are on the road or going to sit in. This is not a gig set or anything like that.

I play Blues. I carry 7. G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb and F. It is very, very rare that I ever have need for anything else.

I'm not going to post a circle of fifths, even although you can see exactly what combinations work. Nope. Not gonna post it. Not gonna do it.

Buz, thanks. The first step is admitting I have a problem. :)
