Are there any plans to put a messaging system in place here on MBH? There have been several times I have wanted to send something to someone here and there was no way to do so.

It's all about what the forum software can do. The easiest way to do it right now is to see if the other member has put contact info in their profile. Lots of people don't, either because they never thought to or because they don't want to or whatever. You can always just ask someone for their email. (It's usually to best to post your email as something like Jondoe at suchandsuch dot com, instead of Jondoe@suchandsuch.com because it's a little harder for spam bots to harvest your email.)

There was talk about updating some features a while ago, but I don't know what is going on with that.

There are a few of us probably who would be open to helping with the website. There are also PHP based websites which come with all these features built in and can be designed in a couple days just by pushing buttons.

Displaying my email address on a publicly-searchable or accessible website is not my idea of discretion. I already get inundated with crap day in and day out.
If this site format doesn't allow private messaging, then perhaps someone could set up a "subscription only" page or location where each username could be crossed against email and/or location.

Actually, you can private message someone on this forum by doing the following:

Type "Psssst, [username][message]"

The user will then respond with a "What, speak up, I can't hear you!"

Big Daddy Ray, as I understand it, some of the reluctance to switch formats has to do with preserving page rankings and keeping posting access to all the old threads. There are a bunch of old threads on the topic.

Buzadero, yeah, I try to make it at least difficult for autoscrapers to pick the stuff up, but someone determined to spam by hand can still get you.

I really can't see the problem here. If you want to PM someone and they don't have an email address in their profile. Just ask them in a forum thread to email you. Make sure you have your email in your profile. If you don't want it there permanently you can remove it from your profile as soon as they have sent you a PM.

I'm on another forum that got transferred to a whole new forum service, and the old threads and page rankings and everything was kept intact.

Ridge,,,reminds me of the days on the early AOL service when you had someone you disliked. You would tell them they could cuss out a chat guide, which was basically a chat moderator, as long as you type the word whisper in brackets before you did it. They would do it and be kicked off AOL,lol.

Gene, it's all in if you transfer the datebase from the current set up to the new one or not. A lot skip that process and lose all the previous stuff because they don't want to wait on the process to complete which can be a long transfer process. Even though it is just done by pushing a couple buttons.

Jim, not really. If there is a database created on the server, which is sometimes the case, you just save it and upload it with the new set up.

I'm just looking at the way this forum works, and I suspect it's not database driven. I wouldn't be half surprised to find out it was file driven, which would make transferring the whole thing a big ol' pain in the ass.

I'm not sure if HTML is allowed in the profile pages, but if it's unadulterated HTML then you can encrypt your email address so spammers can't read it (the spam software that is).

Even transferring it if it is database driven can be a pain if you aren't a patient person while it uploads, lol.

And on top of that, you'd likely have to write a migration script.
