A couple weeks ago I got a Hohner Chromonica 64 on Ebay for $5. It's one of the older ones with a wood comb and nails as opposed to screws and a plastic comb.

It arrived today and physically it is not bad. I see nothing on the exterior that can not be fixed up.

However, the slide button does not pop back into position once pushed. I immediately went to Google to research the parts since I am only familiar with diatonics and it seems I may either need to put it back in place if it got dislodged or replace it for a few bucks.

Any words of advice on Chromatic repair before I go about tackling this project on my own?

Edit- Upon looking through the back of the harp I can see that the spring has become dislodged and is sticking out between the comb and the slide assembly. I am assuming this should be easy to put back if the spring is not broken.

Edit #2- Ok so that was not the spring I saw sticking out. It is either extremely thick beard hairs or a monster Grand Daddy Long Legs got stuck inside between the reed plates and cover plates .....

I disassembled the harp and used Bar Keepers friend on the cover plates, mouth piece and slide button assembly.

With the reed plates having wind savers would it be an issue to soak those in BKF as well?

"It is either extremely thick beard hairs or a monster Grand Daddy Long Legs got stuck inside between the reedplates and cover plates."

And that is why, despite buying 1/2 a dozen harps off eBay, I have yet to actually try to play one! (Mostly I buy old Magnus plastic harps because I have an art project in mind for.)

Well. When you clean them and reseal the comb there really is no harm in playing it.
I just looked at the comb for the first time.I just tossed it aside and went to clean the covers.

Dave Paynes cracked chromatic comb repair video is going to come in handy it seems. It is not all the way through but is front to back.

The cracked comb is typical of wood combed chromatics of that vintage. They always glued together two pieces of wood, usually at the same spot, and that's where it cracks.

You can't buy new parts for the slide assembly because Hohner changed the design when they came out with plastic combed 64s. You may not need to, though. If you really do need replacement parts, you may be able to get original parts from Mike Easton or another chromatic customizer, or you can use Hering mouthpiece and slide parts if you can find them.
