What kind of spam program can infiltrate a forum so violently?

Reposted. (Sorry, I'm doing a search to find any stray posts someone posted after and your thread had that name in it and it is a hassle to go change thread names when you are also dealing with a spammer.)
I'm not sure I understand their end game. I know spam can boost their sites ratings, but I'd think the search engines would also look for posts that are deleted or sudden huge numbers of posts all in one place, by one person with the same exact text. Who knows?

MrVlun, actually, some of our most virulent spammers have been hawking gold. At one point it even seemed they were searching the forum for hits that might help them target. Jason had a thread about gold plating that I seem to remember got hit a few times and for a while any time anyone said 'wow!' that thread would get hit. :)
