I always post to youtube first.
Then hit share, embed and then copy.
Post here by pasting the embed code.

Then click on '2'
Then copy code from box 3 and paste that into your post.

Is there a way to take a video file from computer and put it directly onto a posting here circumventing youtube?

No.
You can host the video anywhere you want, then embed or link it here only.

Iceman, no, you have to use YouTube or another hosting service. Videos take up a ton of bandwidth and drive space. Even big news sites usually link to an outside hosting site. If a video posted on a small site suddenly gets a ton of hits it can overwhelm the site if it's hosted locally. If you don't want to deal with the crazy YouTube posters you can just disable comments when you upload the video there.
