The bass and percussion are really simple, almost pedal tones. Even although they are mostly rapping they are still rapping in pitch, which not all rap does. The different voices almost work like different notes and provide changes in sound in an otherwise very static song. The harmonica, because everything else is so simple, can sort of dance along over the top and create a melody against the chords created by the rappers and the bass. Everything is balanced really well.

Or at least that's what I'm hearing. We just added a bass and a second guitar to our band and I'm finding I have to change how I play on some songs. Before I was free to make up melodies over the chords the guitar player was playing; now I have to worry about crossing parts with the second guitar and make sure any syncopation I do doesn't clash with what the bass is doing or we end up with a mess. Before I could just play on top of the music, more like what this harmonica is doing.
