I am getting ready to start working on about 30 Golden Melodies, that eventually will be for sale. I have been accumulating custom combs for them, and will do a complete customization on them. Normally, when I do a GM I use the same Compromised Just tuning that I use for all my other harps, unless someone asks for a different tuning. So, my question for you Golden Melody players is this. Do you like the equal temperament that they are supposed to come in, or would you rather they be tuned some other way.

That one you made for me with the sweet wood comb and the compromised is awesome, but I also don't think I'd hate it if it were ET, since I play more than blues.

I play GM's Harvey and my friend Henry is going to put a wooden comb in for me on a D and work on it a bit.

I got the wooden comb from Tom (Florida Trader) and there is an extra screw hole in the comb at the front of the 5th tine.

I asked him about this and he replied that the new GM's come with this extra hole? Can you confirm that this is the case with new GM's please.

Reed plates as replacements I have bought recently have NOT got this extra hole.

As for the tuning I prefer to leave it as is.

I like both too: Yours and Hohners but I think your chords play less abrasively. With the generic Golden Melody 12 people run out the door when I solo. With a Harvey tuned Golden Melody only 5 people flee! Back to the firecrackers! d

I received an assortment of great GM combs from Tom as well (I haven't been able to switch them in yet but really look forward to it). d

Nick:

I've been meaning to send you one of these. Hopefully a picture will suffice. You can see the hole in the middle tine to accommodate an extra screw if desired.

I'm not quite sure how to embed a picture so if this didn't work, perhaps one of you kind fellows can tell me how to do it and I can try again.

I don't know how many you have in what keys but maybe you could do half in each. You might even be able to sell some in pairs for people interested in what two high quality harps, same model, same key, sound like with different tunings.

Of course, it might just be easiest to sell them as equal but offer a free tuning to just if the customer wants.

Wow Nate. Thats a good idea. Thanks.

As for the screws. There is not need to put a screw in the front of the middle tine.

I have found Halchak (Florida Trader) combs to be pretty flat, but I would wetsand the draw plate with 400 and then 600 wet paper, on top of granite or glass.

Sand the front corners of both reedplates, and lap in the front of the plates too.

The HTML looks alright. Make sure the image is set to public and make sure you have the image url not the page url. I tried cutting and pasting your link but it just took me to the front page of Photobucket. I tried shortening the link and I got to this...

This is what the HTML should look like:

<img src="http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee488/Florida-Trader/IMG_5479.jpg?t=1309800120" width="496" height="211.2">

Since it was displaying too big I added the width height. I looked at the image properties, took out my little calculator and multiplied them by .8 to get something that fit better. The embed button on Photobucket worked, but it made the image too big.

Well thanks nacoran. I appreciate the help.

Nick - I hope this answers your question about the hole on the middle tine.

Harvy, I was just talking to my guitar player about this Saturday and I think I wrote on another post about the same thing. I like the size and feel of the G/M's. With certain songs I feel the tuning of a S/P 20 would sound and mix better.
If you made a G/M in the key of E tuned to Just innotation I would be very intrested in it.

Shredder, its coming. email me please
@Harmmonicanick. I have seen many GMs, and they all seem to have the hole in the middle tine. I have no clue as to why. Nobody seems to use it, including me. It also has two extra holes on on each side which they no longer use. I know that when the GM had 6 screws they used these holes, but it did not seem to work out well, and they went back to nails. These 6 screw GMs don't customize as well for me as the other ones, but maybe it is just me.

@ Shredder-One of my favorite harps is a Golden Melody with Special 20 reed plates made for me by Rupert Oysler-it's by far the most airtight harp I own-key of Bb-it's also been the most consistent as far as longevity, staying in tune-
