There are always debates on here discussing what harp someone should buy first, or what amp, but they are always detached from buying power. There is a pretty standard type of article in computer magazines where they say take X amount of money and build the best system you can. They usually set a few price points. Let's see what we can come up with, in a few different price ranges, for two different scenarios.

The first scenario is someone who has never picked up a harp before. Assume they may not know how to tweak this or that to get sound and they are going more or less plug and play. What gear or combinations of gear should they buy?

Price Ranges:

$50
$250
$500
$1000

The second scenario is for the more experienced player, someone who plays shows for money (or at least tips). A meteorite falls out of the sky and wipes out all of their gear. Right after buying a lottery ticket and a bitchin' T-Shirt that says 'I Survived the Meteor Strike of 2011' what do they buy to get ready to go back on the road?

$250
$500
$1000
$2000

And finally, if that lottery ticket comes in, what do you buy with that money, harp related or otherwise. Let's say it's 2.75 million in a lump sum, after taxes?

Okay, I'll start filling out my list. This is going to take some thought.

Beginner-
$50- A SP20 in C and a box of Piedmonts
$250- A mix of 7 keys, 1 MB, 1 SP20, 1 Lee Oskar, 1 GM, 1 Seydel 1847, 1 Hering 1923, 1 Manji

Pro-
$250- 7 of your personal favorite harps.

I'll fill in more as I think about it.

nacoran> Thats really hard. We all have to budget & make do with whatever we can afford, however had I avoided many of the earlier buying mistakes I might have had better gear than I currently have?

I figure that playing the harp, which for me is a hobby, is very cheap. It's only cheap by comparison to other hobbies like Golf or Sailing Yachts!

Another facet is that technology is rapidly changing. Not so much with harps, but with eg recording equipment which becomes obsolete the day after purchase.

But the $50 option as a starting point has me buying a C Harp Sp20, Bluesmaster, Lee Oskar etc. From then on the journey with its many pitfalls starts.

With the lottery money I would quit playing harmonica and buy:

- 50+" Newtonian Reflector.

- A very nice Hydrogen Alpha solar that could fit it. ;)

- I would install a concrete pillar vertically through the middle of my house. Dug down past the foundation and ejecting through the roof. I would then make another floor around the pillar. The floor would have a sliding roof.

- I would then shovel about $50,000 for a mount that would support that big of a reflector.

- Buy the best CCD equipment I can get.

- Buy 5 Computers.

That would be about it..............

Miles, you'd be founding the Dharma Initiative, I take it?

Seriously, I wondered about the question and thought, nah, it's probably obvious we should keep it harp related, but hey.

I'd probably spend the money on a nice detached house so that at least my sounds wouldn't piss the neighbours off, then I'd have a grand piano and a trumpet and a hifi and a HG50 and maybe I'd learn guitar too. Nah, I'm too lazy, I wouldn't practise. I'd watch my 103" plasma screen instead.

Actually, I'm mildly curious about astronomy, but here in London, you can't even see the milky way. On a really clear night you can see the moon if you go out in the street and look South, lol. But living in the country where the air is clear, yeah, I could blow a portion of 2.7 mil on a 12" or 16" reflector (after investing and guaranteeing an income).

Hmm, 2.7 mil. I think about 700k on my house and 2 mil invested should give me 10k a month. My house would have fruit trees and a herb and vegetable garden and I'd hire a housekeeper/gardener and I'd learn cookery at night school.

Oh, sorry, is this a harp forum? Damn, I was enjoying myself.

You want 5 computers? I find that one is more than I really want!

hm. $250, i'd concentrate on harps. as many manji's as i could get. beg steal or borrow and amp and mic or play straight acoustic or through the p.a.
%00. roland micro cube and a good low z mic plus the manjis.
$1000. vintage low watt tube amp and a good cm bullet mic, then a set of harps. manjis.
&2000. big set of reworked mb harps and whatever tube amp and high z mic i could afford after that.

I'll play the meteor game...

$250 - All spent on harps...Special 20's

$500 - $250 on harps, $100 on a SM57, $50 cables, $100 on more harps

$1,000 - I'd take the extra $500 and buy a VHT Special 6 and use the rest for a delay pedal and another SM57...anything else on cables and a mic stand

$2,000 - Another $1,000? I'd buy more harps (try to get my hands on some Crossovers) and a larger amp

Seriously, I'd look into a few cheap customising tools, such as a bench hand-drill. I'd stick with Marine Bands. And I'd buy an Ultimate SM57.

Actually, this raises a bitch I want to get off my chest about HiFi magazines. Ever since the Seventies they've been saying spend equal amounts on front end, amp and speakers, and I've always felt that you should spend more on speakers than that. Currently I have an Arcam Solo (£1,000) and some Monitor Audio Bronze BR5's (£400). I reckon I've woefully underspent on speakers. I probably figured £400 is about half a grand, but £700 (Monitor Audio RX6 or Mission MX5) would be much more suitable, and you can assume that the CD player and amp are worth more than £500 each, but that there are cost savings by putting them both in the one box.

I dunno, was that totally OT, or are magazines generally crap?
