I have been working on a lot of Golden Melodies as of late, and recently came across one with the round headed rivets, rather than the cross hatched ones. I have also seen these in some of the older Marine Bands. Can someone(Bob, Joe) help me with dating these plates? Are they generally considered to be better, worse, or equal to the older harps with the cross Hatched rivets

Thanks for the help.

I have been looking for a simple hammer style rivet set. All I can find online are pop rivet tools.

I have been punching them out using two reedplates stacked so I don't bend the reeds. I know there is an easier way. Plus putting the reeds back in is incredibly challenging with just a Hemostat, rivet spike and tack hammer. Incredibly challenging.

what's the color of brass? ligh-yellowish, dark yellow, or sort of pinkish-yellow?

I have two of the pre screw GMs apart One is the Cross Hatch Rivet, and one is the round rivet They are both the same light yellow, with what looks like the same profile. The one with the round rivets look like they were tuned by a better assembly worker. In saying this, I mean that the Cross Hatch rivet model has tuning marks on the tips to raise the pitch, and deeper gouges on lots of the reeds to lower the pitch, which carry over onto the plate.. I know that this is a quality control issue. I also am assuming that the round rivet plates are older, but I am curious at to how much older. Thought I did not measure the clearances, they appear to be about the same, and the reeds appear to be straight in the slots.

I came across MBs like these. I think it was a 1970's OldStandby...

can't say its reeds were any good though.

Harvey, contact Pat Missin and he will most likely know the answer. He is very knowledgable about all things Hohner and will answer all your e-mails. He was able to give me a lot of information about a Hohner assembly plant in Ireland that was in production up to the 1970's. Lovely guy and a real Hohner expert. At the bottom of his home page is a link to contact him
