I have a small video camera (Kodak Zi8) which has a brilliant teeny weeny built in mic which can record a gnat farting 10 miles away. For its size it is brilliant and records all frequencies exceptionally well.

On the other hand, I have a pretty sophisticated desktop PC
which has a plug-in mic which is only just OK. It's fine for recording the voice if you hold it 1 nanometer away from your mouth but it just doesn't have the sensitivity of the Kodak.

I'd like to achieve the same sensitivity on my PC mic. Anyone know anything about this subject please and have any recommendations which are affordable?

I don't want to go down the Blue Yeti mic route.

Many thanks.

I've got one of these
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-ECMMS907-CE7-Microphone/dp/B00005QBUW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302621175&sr=8-1

I use in for my PC and my Edirol digi recorder.
For the money its a great stereo mic.

Blue has some other microphones too with slightly less ominous desk profiles. Once I got rid of the the defective first one I got I've been very happy with my 'little' Yeti. Their other microphones are really well reviewed too. There are a bunch of reviews on YouTube of podcasting setups. (Podcasters seem to be perfect for reviewing microphones, they love to talk, review things and since it's audio you can hear the quality of the microphone).

@7limitJI. Thanks I may look at that if I can't find anything down the DIY route. The Amazon reviews for that were quite positive. I found an MCP606 opamp chip for 7p which may be useful if I can find a decent circuit. It could take it's power out of a USB port.

@Nacoran. Thanks good idea. I'll go and check them out now.
