OK. I just got my Richard Sleigh tuning tools. The 1st harp I go to tune is a Manji. I tuned all the top plate blow hole reeds first. Then I realized that on the reeds that were sharp, I used the draw scraper and removed material from the OUTSIDE of the the reed/reedplate instead of reaching into the hole and removing it like I think I should have. The harp still tuned up fine.

Seeing that it's a welded instead of riveted on reed, does it really matter that the tuning marks are on the opposite side of the reed? For flat reeds were you remove material from the tip, the tuning marks are on the same (back) side as you pull the reed through the back to file the end.

It won't really matter.

Makes no difference.
I've been tuning like that for a few years, to save having to take the reedplates off to tune up.

You can do it that way just stay away from the edge of the reed.

Thanks! Sure is a lot easier seeing what you are doing.

ditto what everyone said.
the reason for doing the underside is cosmetic. but even so,i'd bet very few people are inclinded to remove cover plates to admire their tuning work, or perhaps, show it off at partys
