I have been working on my tongue block method for a couple of months now after 3 or 4 years of pretty successful lip pursing. I am finding it difficult to keep a dry harp, as I seem to produce a lot more saliva when I am TBing. Any comments?

Are you pressing your tongue against the harp hard? I was taught to use just the tip of your tongue. That may keep some of the salivary glands out of the way. Just a guess though. ---------- "A harmonica is not just a souped up kazoo" -Mo Rocca

Keep your head/chin up. Don't look at the floor. Keeps saliva in your mouth, but then you have to deal with it there. Try to keep a sense of breathing through the harp rather than sucking air through.

I think it makes a difference how you work it between the notes. If you keep your tongue waggin' in the wind you'll get less spit than if you keep sticking it in and out.

Hi Billy I'm having exactly the same problem 3 months into learning to TB. Took it up with my teacher (Dennis) on the weekend and he said it will get better with time. Just keep practicing. Rob

Hi Billy,
Excess saliva follow by dry mouth and lips are the process of leanring to play 100% TB. Everyone has to go through it, no short cuts. It will go away after putting it enough hours.

Another note... plastic combs or metal combs are more spit tolerant! Your goal is to spit less, but while you're working on a salivary solution a simpler solution may be temporary substitution.

Thanks for the tips. I guess I'll just keep at it.
