I would like to replace the nails with screws on my MB cover plate and would like suggestions as to size and length of screw. I think it would be 3/8" long but not sure. I would like the screws to be larger than the 0-80. Any suggestions approciated.

3/8 of an inch is just a little too short.

I use M2 10mm and find them perfect. I use the same screws for the reedplates, too. A tap is a lot cheaper than using nuts.

i use 1/72 slotted screws and nuts for the covers. very close in size to the 10mm. either are good.

you are right about not useing 0-80s. they are difficult to deal with. you can barely get your fingers around them and you drop them and can't find the damn things. plus, you need a nut driver. i'll never use 0-80s for that purpose again.

I have some 1/2" 2-56 and cut off the excess so they are almost flush with the nuts...mostly because I can get them a couple blocks from my house.

As arzajac said the 3/8" is to short if you are going to use nuts. 2-56 x 7/16" with matching nuts. You can use 2-56 x 3/8" stainless steel philips panhead machine screws and they'll self tap once you drill a hole in the covers slightly smaller. I've done it both ways. If you take the covers off alot your better off with the longer screws and nuts.

i like some play in the holes so i can line up the covers easier. i make wide holes in the wood. phillips or slotted doesn't matter.
though you get better purchase, as a rule, with phillips. i just like the retro look of slotted screws.
