My name is kobi, im from israel, ive been playing for something like 4 months trying to absorb everything I can from anybody I can, especially gussow and ricci and some other guys. I look forward to learn for you guys I know there are realllly good harmonica players here... Im kind of an advanced begginer I think? although I can bend nicely, I just havent been able to jam, maybe I was working too much on technique and quite nothing on improv... I just dont really know what to do out there on that lonesome 12 bar blues changes. If you give me a riff and tell me to modify it to the changes based on the intervals ill do it! But plain improvising, no riffing no copying the bass line? I just dont know how! Wonder if you can give me a tip on that... and I dunno if its the place (i guess it will be deleted it if isnt), but I was kinda wondering if I can ask for help transcribing something from one of jason ricci's vids, called "Chordal Vamping etc..." heres the link to it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vISVB-NUH4
on 3:35 jason does his vamp and then a lick and then another vamp, I managed to get this much out (its the lick, not the vamp): -2 -3bb -3 -4 6 5 -3b -2 2
but afterwards, I dunno what he's doing! and i dunno if the bit i got is even correct... If its okay and possible and someone can help me with that I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance guys, kobz

Welcome Kobi, sounds like you are off to a good start. There are others here who can better answer your question on improv. What has helped me is learning where the major, pentatonic, and blues scale are on the harp and the names of the notes. Playing chromatic scales helps too because I hear all the notes that are available. Play the scales starting at different scale degrees, up and down. Its kinda like packing the suitcase so you will have something to wear. Don't give up and have fun!

hey Kobi first off relax!! and welcome! You aint going to copy Jason in a couple of weeks.
Start with the Gussowmeister's lessons and and enjoy yourself. Jamming comes to those who go through a portal, and Adam will show you that path.
Good luck

aint nothing wrong with using the bass line as your guide. the bass is your friend. you can follow it thru the changes and play around with the root notes of the chords.

Hello Kobi ! Being from Israel, have you heard the Adler Trio ? They are all vituoso's, but Michal has to be one of the world's best.
You will learn alot here, from oldsters to newbies. Sometimes, it is just little hints and simple stuff. Other times, it is inspiration to explore on your own and find that unique sound that keeps us all young. You never know what you will discover.
I have one student that struggled...literally plodded for several years playing diatonic. Then an Aunt of his gave him an antique Larry Adler Special chromatic. A beautiful ( and now quite pricey ) instrument. He was a natural on it ! He's now doing jazz and progressive rock.

Welcome aboard! Ricci is beyond my abilities. Every now and then he posts when someone asks about one of his songs. If not, some of the other players may help out. :)

Welcome Kobz. Ma Nishma? (thats all the hebrew your gonna get from me -slecha)
He gives you some transcription at the beginning himself- later he is doing pretty simple chugging. I'm not someone who transcribes - but this excercise seems to be more about feel and rhythm anyway. I would just try to get a feel for the instrument and mimic him as best you can. b-seder? ----------

Wow thanks guys for all the comments and especially the hebrew ones!:)
1. I did hear about adler's trio, never heard em playing actually, Im really not aquainted with the israeli harmonica/blues scene, although ive recently found out about some cool stuff, check this out for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAFJQzb0wsU&feature=related
2. I live in Holon, in israel, it is a nice place, quite bluesy sometimes for sure.
orphan: thanks for the tip about the scales!
bonedog569: Shalom! thanks for the comment, I know that its about feel and rythem but i really liked that lick and wanted to get it.. I guess ricci is too much... ;D toda anyways!
back to the topic. I dunno guys, I guess I lack the "path" of practicing (routine, scale excersizes etc...) cause as I said, I can work day and night on a certain technique, but when it come being "fluent" in my playing and just jam, I get stuck really fast... I guess I need some more practice on the improv section. Thanks alot for the comments thought! really encouraging!

Making the effort to learn complete songs accurately can help you tremendously, especially for improvising. You get new licks, you also get to understand how the feel of the song is created, and you learn to master rhythm. Well worth the effort. I think this topic of the merits of learning full songs has been addressed in previous threads as well.
