I have tried duplicating the flute with my harp on stairway to heaven-does anyone know what key led zep played it in-I seem to want to play it in 3rd position using 1draw as the root note-is it in a minor key?

I looked at two different sources of the sheet music and they both have a key signature for C or A minor (no sharps or flats) and the song ends on an A, which suggests it is in A minor
I would assume the flute is in the same key, although the sheet music I found seemed to be for guitar.

This isn't completely right, but it will get you there, I think.

It is Am but may be Abm because lots of bands down-tuned a half-step.

I have just worked out a tab for the flute part played on a C harp which works ok if you want to play over the song. It starts on the 5 blow but unfortunately contains four overblows, although on a couple of occasions you could use an alternative note that harmonizes as I have indicated. (I noticed there is a little flute harmony going on in places on the song.) I guess you could always compromise with the other two overblows and find an alternative note that doesn't sound too bad.
+5+4+4, -4+5+5
+5+5OB-6+6+5
+6+6,+6, +6+5OB(or -6 to harmonize)+5OB(or -6 to harmonize)
+5-6+6+6+5OB+5-4
-6+7-7+7
-8+8-8, +6-6-6

have you played it?it seems a G harp played in 3rd position is actually in key so guess it must be Aminor

I haven't played it before but ran through it on a C harp to tab it. Tried it with a G and I get this.
-6 (4beats) -5 (4beats) -5(4 beats)+6-6-6
-6-7-8+7-6
+7+7,+7,+7-7-7
-6-8+7+7-7-6+6
-8-9+8-9+9-10(that got the attention of the dog next door)
