I just read another post here on boutique amps and figured I,d throw this one at you folks out there in MBH land.Anyway last night I went down to Stockton College in South Jersey to attend the above mentioned show.I havn,t been a Tuna fan in quite some years but when I saw that Charlie was on the bill, well of coarse I had to be there. The show started out acoustic which included Jorma,Jack,Charlie,Jim Lauderdale,(who I had never heard of but was very good)a great mandolin player and believe it or not G E Smith on second guitar. All I can say is 'wow',what a line-up and what a great first set, approximately 1 hour.Charlie played on most tunes but went stage left on a couple of tunes. He played through the house PA/vocal mike during the first set, demonstrating acoustic style blues and singing a couple,Great Set.They then took a short break, approx 10 minutes and then came out playing electric and Charlie was playing through his Cruncher and was blowing through a bright red bullet, his tone of coarse awesome. He pretty much played on every song in the second set and played and sang a couple of his tunes, mostly from his newest release The Well, jokingly saying a few times while on stage that his cd,s were available at the shows end.(complete with his autograph)One of the last tunes he did toward the end of the set was Christo Redemptor, one of my all time favorites of his with the mandolin doing expressive fills that really gave the song a nice little twist, bottom line again, awesome. The set ended and of course they came out for one more number but Charlie was in the lobby getting ready for the meet and greet as well as cd sales.I had brought a picture of him and myself that was taken back in his Continental Drifter(great cd if you havn,t heard it) tour and asked him if he could sign it for me and of coarse he was much abliged.I chatted with him for about five minutes or more before the crowd came out and I told him how much of an inspiration that he was to me and commented on his tone that he was getting out of his Cruncher and he told me that he also had an Avenger and said that they were the best amps that he had ever played through and that he loves to sit around in his office/music room and listen to the great tone that he gets out of it even at very low volumes.I mentioned to him that I had a Meteor(Big Boy)which I love and he said I had one of those, but really spoke very, very highly of the Crunchers.Oh Boy,am I gonna have to sneak one of those into my sound lounge without the Mrs.noticing?(keep that under your hats, please)I also mentioned that he comes up from time to time on MBH and he hadn,t heard of it but said "I hope they,re sayin good things about me",the man is the best all around. If anyone has a chance to see this show I would highly recommend it.All of the players were absoloutly on they,re game and there were times when Jorma was looking at GE Smith during leads with the 'Wow' look on his face. After the winter we,ve had here in Jersey I really needed that, believe you me,especially sharing some time with Charlie. For anyone interested thats in the central/north Jersey area they,re playing a the Count Basie Theator in Red Bank on Thursday,2/17.

Thanks for the post NiteCrawler. I first met Charlie at The Botttom Line in NYC-Kid Ramos was on guitar at the time. I had him autograph my copy of "Signature" ,and we chatted briefly. I also saw him as part of Hummels Blowout with Kim Wilson where his mic cable came unplugged-Kim and Mark were elbowing each other, sort of joking about it,but Charlie just reached down, plugged the cable back in ,and picked up where he left off. He apologized to the audience after the tune was over-a true professional. Modest Charlie is too-such a nice guy. I wondered how the Hot Tuna gigs would go down-it sounds really cool. Thanks for the report-I'm glad you enjoyed it!!! Tom Fiacco.

I love Memphis Charlie' I've heard him play several times in the past, BUT the best time that I met him. he was staying in the hotel where I worked at, along with DR.John, Keb MO,and a female singer that I don't recall her name. they where kicking off the House of Blues concert tour back in '96 or '97. I met him and his wife in the parking lot they where looking for some place to get a quick lunch, I spoke to them both as we walk to the store. He is with out adoubt the nicest performer I've ever met. I asked him very politly if he could give a beginner some tips on the harp... his reply was "it's all about breath control son" learn to breath THROUGH the harp and find the groove. I was completely taken back by how nice and relaxed he was, and although he could have said alot of things to me then I still hear his voice in my head when I get a little flustered on stage and loose my place (sometimes) this little montra really helps me out. and relaxes me. I will be his fan forever.

I hope they play SF with this lineup - that would be sweet indeed. I only caught Tuna once with Will Scarlette , at a reunion show at the Filmore and it was great. Love to hear them with Charlie. ----------
