Been offered a gig. Once month in a publicly owned Bistro. Not much money in it. But its a regular gig.
Trouble is we need our own public liability insurance. They have asked if we are in the Musicians union. Joining gives insurance cover.
Any members on here ?
Is it worth it?
Cheers Cam

I've played all over the world (not harmonica!) and never had "public liability insurance"? Seems like the venue should have that covered? I'm not a union member tho, and don't know many musicians that are (I do know a small number).

Not a member of the union, but our band does have PLI - it is a standard requirement for most wedding venues, bigger clubs and festival type gigs in the UK. £2m worth of cover costs us about £250 pa (I think - I don't really deal with that side of the band.) the same venues also require Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) certificates for all the gear we use: that costs about £100 a year.

I'm not presently a union member, but if you're gigging just on a local scene, depending on the area where you live, it may not be worth your while unless you are playing in venues that are strictly union, like REALLY large venues (such as rooms that have a capacity of at 500++ people and the acts are often going to be bigger and many times national or regional), or you are gonna be a full time studio session pro, playing hotel circuits, and symphony orchestras or on nationally televised broadcasts.
Now this is all US based experience, but if you're gonna be on the road and being a full time musician, it's an absolute NECESSITY just for your own protection just in terms of wages and the ability to get inexpensive (relatively) instrument insurance and also a credit card.
You may want to ask the pub if that's all union because non union guys are gonna be considered scabs and can be a problem if you're non union. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte
