Hi folks, I was wondering if anyone out there knows when the TB technique originated? What style of music was it used in first?

Well, afaik, it's the style of music that the harp was originally created for.

You play the melody starting hole 4 and slap the chords with the tongue.

So really,... TB was there first. :)

Yep, I believe the harp was invented with German Polkas in mind and tongue blocking allowed the 'oom pa pa' sound to be played.
