Just thought I'd say hi now I've finally decided to take the harp a bit seriously after a year of noodling around, and also to thank Adam for one of the few forums on the web that still actually has useful and insightful content from knowledgeable people.
Should probably also introduce myself: hi I'm sven from Southampton in southern England and I'm a 19 year old student. Musical tastes vary from Stevie RV to Tom Waits to of course the Sonny boy's and the Walters. My enthusiasm and love for the harmonica and blues in general outweigh any technical or theoretical ability so bear with me if I'm stupid.
On that note I'd like to ask my first question at you UK harpers out ther: any suggestions for gigs or nights in the next six months anywhere in the south of england, because I have found the blues 'scene' and particularly the harmonica scene lacking in these here parts. Anyway thanks again and see ya 'down the road' as Adam says.

You have one of the UK's finest harp players coming to S'oton on 22 Apr, Pete G & the Magnitones @ Platform Tavern SO14 2NY.

Check out events at the Brook.

Hugh Budden is an excellent harp player from Bournemouth, check him out he gets down your way from time to time, with Pete Harris Blues.

You can't mention "Southampton" & "blues" without mentioning Bob Pearce, no harp, nevertheless he's a bit of a legend.

Don't know if you know West Weston. He's playing in London fairly regularly and looks like he has a few dates in Southend and other places. Check out his myspace. http://www.myspace.com/westweston

Tower arts centre in Winchester isn't that far from Southampton, it's worth checking out the acts playing there.

Hi and welcome Sven (and it's nice to rub shoulders with Shoulders on this post) I'm just along the coast from him in Eastbourne.

Don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for but this annual Blues Festival held in West Sussex. might be of interest.

From the website:-

http://www.visitchichester.org/thedms.asp?dms=13&feature=1&venue=3446641

Blues on the Farm, the annual four-day West Sussex based festival, has been named 'Best British Blues Festival' of 2010 in the annual British Blues Awards … And two leading blues artists have already been booked to play the 20th Anniversary Festival in June 2011.

The accolade of 'Best British Blues Festival' followed a major public vote, which placed Blues on the Farm as the UK's most popular blues festival, beating-off competition from numerous other events around the country. The festival, staged annually in June, is already hugely popular among musicians and audiences and, in announcing the award, the British Blues Awards citation stated, "Blues on the Farm has for many a year been the festival the blues artists prefer to perform at. Now the people who pass through the gate have had their say and voted Blues on the Farm the Best British Blues Festival 2010. Congratulations!"

The Best British Blues Festival Award comes just as Blues on the Farm announces its dates for its 20th Anniversary Festival in 2011. With a revamped schedule to ensure each day offers fans a full and varied line-up of bands and musicians, the 2011 dates will run as follows:
" Friday 17th June 1.00 pm to 12 midnight
" Saturday 18th June 12 noon to 12 midnight
" Sunday 19th June 11.30am to 10pm

In addition, there will be a pre-festival gig for campers on the evening of Thursday 16th June from 7.30 pm to 12 midnight.

All the best.

Kieron

You should also check out the National Harmonica League Web site for workshops and festivals as that is a great place to meet up with other players.

Thanks guys its nice to feel welcome :). Also nice to see that there are plenty of exceptional players even within the south of England. I know almost all the areas you guys have mentioned pretty well so you may see me at as many of the events and stuff time permits. Thanks again guys and I'll check those things out

Hi Sven, there is the Backdoor Man Blues Jam every thursday night in Bristol at the Cornubia Pub in Temple St, bristol BS1. This a short walk from the train station and you would be welcome.

There is a large community of harp players in Bristol and incidentally the city is the home of the National Harmonica Festival the last weekend in October, not to be missed!

I'm from Truro, and all this local stuff is good news to me as a relative newby.
I'm going to try to get to the Swanage Festival, even if it's only as a day visitor.

Oh, and welcome Sven

The Bristol jam sounds interesting too.

@Svenharp:

Drop me a line if you're coming up to London in search of live music involving harmonicas or if you happen to be in town on a Tuesday and fancy coming along to the London Harmonica Group (we meet every other week).

Oxharp (AKA "Ten Lungs" in my head - you should hear how long he can hold a chord!) is wise (but we knew that already) and right to point you to the NHL. If you haven't already, check out his YouTube channel: there's no finer collection of harmonica vids in the UK.
