hey guys.. the harp player in my band will have his birthday soon and I'm looking for ideas for a present.. something along the lines of a cd or book. I can find a lot of beginners and intermediate level books and dvds but he's surpassed that stage by now.. any cool ideas for an advanced harmonica player?

cheers,

Steven

How about harmonica cufflinks?

Or if you're set on a book or DVD and your friend is into tinkering with his harps - Richard Sleigh's book is well worth the money as is Rupert Oysler's DVD.

Greetings Steavis,
I bought a book from Amazon recently called "Masters of the Blues Harp" by Glenn Weiner. If your mate has gone past intemediate he might appreciate this. It's a mix of biographies and tabs, and, I might add, way way beyond me.

Rick Estrin has a cool DVD on 'secrets and subtleties' of blues harp. Very entertaining.

Suzuki do a little 5 hole harp in black which is pretty cool, and plays well, and you can hang around your neck.

on the cd front you could get him the:

guys, thx a lot for the ideas. He has the rick estrin DVD already and loves it. I stumbled across this dvd from mark hummel. Looks pretty neat and features 1st, 2nd, and 3rd position playing as well as chromatic playing. Sounds good. Anyone here saw this dvd?

Steven,

If he's not already a member, you should also send him a link to this forum. A gift that keeps on giving.

Dr. Gussow has lessons for advanced players as well. I would recommend these. Click the "The Store" link on your screen left. As far as books go. "Mr. Satan's Apprentice" is great. (at least the free parts I've read off Google Books...I'm saving up)

If you know the brand of harps he plays, you could see what the company has to offer. Hohner has some sweet shirts, mugs, and even a flash drive.

I don't think everything is listed on their website and you might want to call.

I think Rick Estrin's DVD is the only one worth buying, I have Mark Hummel's DVD and a few others and I wouldn't recommend them.

Kim Field's book, 'Harmonicas, Harps, and Heavy Breathers is great

i would *highly* recommend the book "Mister Satan's Apprentice". on the off chance he has that, "Journeyman's Road" is a close second.

What's his favorite model? Marine Band? Something else? Contact some of the customizers you can reach here (there's a number of respected ones that participate here regularly) and see if they can turn around his favorite model in his favorite key (A?) in time.

Another DVD Idea - Canned Heat Live at Montreax/The Canned Heat Story twin pack.
