I stumbled across this little gem on youtube: Big Mama Thornton, JB Lenoir, Big Walter Horton, Doctor Ross and John Lee Hooker, all on harp. Doctor Ross' tone at 2 minutes in is fantastic- big and fat.
Personally, I think that Dr Ross sounded the strongest. I do dig the sound that Big Walter had working during the mid-60's. ---------- The Blues Photo Gallery
I've got this vid on dvd: "The American folk blues festival 1962 - 1966" Volume 2 great stuff... ---------- www.sweetportblues.com http://www.myspace.com/arnoudbluesharp
@7limitJI "Notice Dr Ross is playing right on the mic, funnelling the sound with his hands." Yep, I noticed that. There may be some proximity effect as well as being louder as a result of being closer? It's still a great tone! Big Walter's tone is great too, fascinating to watch his use of hand effects. "Hooker does a bit too, but he's very obviously not a harp player." I didn't want to be the first to point that out! I felt a bit sorry for him, as he's up with some serious harp talent there.
