I was playing today and this song came out of nowhere. I knew Gary back in Austin. We both got there around the same time and he would often come out on his lunch to listen as I played on Guadalupe Street in front of the Univ Co-op. He was working as an electrician at the university. We shared Jimmy Carl Black on drums for a spell and played the same clubs and shared a lot of bills. He was a heck of a lead guitarist which is something most people don't know. Walter

great stuff Walter, Gary is my favourite singer/harp player. I did not know he was a great guitarist as well, but it dosent surprise me.

His best cd, imho, is Mr Freeze, he was younger then, but every track on that has been seminal in my own harp journey. The best solo on the album is on 'Jenny brown' in F using Bb in second..stunning.

I miss him very much, even though I am across the pond, and feel your poignant musical memorial very personally thanks

ncpacemaker: thanks. It is simple. Just let your soul sing. I am always amazed no else does what I do because it is so simple. Much easier to let the words and music flow than try and remember songs.......

harmonicanick: Thanks. Yes Gary played a mean lead guitar. He could hold his own with any of the austin hot rod players on a blues shuffle. This song was a a visit he paid while I was playing this afternoon. Mark Korpi played guitar with him in austin. Mark was my neighbor and also the longtime 2nd guitarist with evan johns and the H-bombs. I heard evan is dying. Evan was one of my closest musician friends in Austin. He visited me during my studio party last saturday and his song is song 10 from the videos. Dying souls, pained souls, sad souls, and dead souls seem to like to use me as a vehicle to play once more. I love the honesty and simplicity that channels through me. Walter

Walter knows I have been playing with Mark Korpi lately-his band The Spacecoast Playboys is headed to the IBC finals in Memphis-we are having a send-off/fundraiser for them next weekend. Mark and I have been working on some of Garys unrecorded material.
Mark is a great guitar player, and he also has some strong vocals.

tmf714: Could you ask Mark if he has a phone number for Evan and send me an email? I would like to call him and see how he is doing. Thanks and wish Mark good luck for me in Memphis! Walter

Great job Walter!!

I discovered Gary a few month's ago and i've been steadily buying his c.d.'s ever since.

It was never about how fast Gary could play, he could make one note sound ritcher and better than a thousand. I'm really into his less is more approach.

He took his time and put everything he had into his playing, fantastic player.

Great thread:o)

yup, when I heard "Girl That radiates That Charm",
that was it!
Actually, funny...I didn't know a thing about G.P., until MP played it at a gig years ago.
And, as usual MP nailed it, sending the crowd in to a roar of applause. That was a memorable night.
RIP, gary...
