If you are using an elaborate pedal board, clean is usually better and there's nothing cleaner than a PA.
Elaborate effects are generally reproduced better by a clean amp (I'm not talking abut reverb or delay which i consider part of the sound reinforcement, not an effect). This is because the amp interacts with the effects and the effects interact with the amp.
Personally, I use a more elaborate pedal board with my solid state bass amp than I do with my tube amps. i use a much smaller board with my tube amps that has just a couple of effects which interact well with the tube amps.
