So, I challenge anybody to find the position and write the scale (the tab from hole 1-10) for this jam.

(...without looking into the comments, where the solution is mentioned.)

I'll write down the full answer at the end if the question was too difficult for y'all. :)

It's definitely 5th position. And i believe he's making liberal use of the flat 2d (draw 5, draw 9) which puts him in Phrygian mode.

Btw, by avoiding those notes, as is more commonly done when playing in 5th, one would be playing natural minor.

hvyj, I'm jealous. I hope to eventually learn how to ear train to pick up chords/notes someday. Did you learn on your own or do you have perfect pitch or something?

First of all, it's an awesome clip, thanks for sharing GH.

I will agree with hvyj on the 5th position... it's on a C harp. Root note is "E". I think it may be E minor, but I'm not sure.

I don't know the scale, I know a pentatonic starting on 2 blow and 5 blow.

I like it!
I can just imagine a "Gypsy Punk" singer doing his thing along with it. Like the guy from Gogol Bordello, but not disgusting.

Nice.

@RyanMortos: I don't have a particularly refined ear--far from it. Actually, I don't recognize most intervals all that well by ear, so i have difficulty transcribing. I do have quite a bit of live performance experience, though, and i am proficient in multiple positions, so i can sometimes kinda sorta hear what harp may work on particular material. I can play by ear pretty reliably without hitting bad notes. But not hitting bad notes is not always the same thing as hitting the right notes.

Most experienced players can probably transcribe better than I do. Sometimes when i need to learn a part from a recording i have one of the other musicians write out the notes for me. Sometimes I can transcribe it myself but all too often i can't get it correct--which can be sort of embarrassing sometimes.

BUT i play 5th position quite a bit. I thought I recognized some of the breath patterns he was using and Phrygian mode has a distinctive characteristic sound to it anyway--I could hear the flat 2ds. So i picked up a harp and started trying to copy what he was playing using 5th position and it seemed to work even though I wasn't copying note for note. I wouldn't be able to transcribe what he is playing to tab.

So, yeah, we could both probably benefit from ear training. i know i could. No one has ever accused me of having perfect pitch before.
