I have what I think I remember to be an 80's era green bullet with the original cord. Recently the tip of the jack came off. I took it to my local music store and in order for me to have it back for a gig that night, instead of having to order a part, they put on a low-z jack with a Switchcraft adapter(transformer?). Since then my amp feeds back at a lower volume setting on the amp. I don't seem to have the headroom that I had. The difference is small and I'm not sure if it's just my imagination. Thanks in advance for any insight into this.

i'm guessing this is a mic with the cable built in. runs through a spring thing into the mic and has a 1/4" jack on the other end. if that's the case it's not hard at all to solder a new jack on the cable. if it was me- and i9t has been- i'd cut the jack end off, with the jack, the take the outer case off the jack and keep it handy for reference. then i'd get a new jack at an electronics store and solder it on using the old jack as a guide to which wire goes where and how. those guys got you going quick but they didn't do you any favors. i'd get it put back to high z asap.

The only way to prevent cable failures is to rip the cable out and install a screw-on connector. It sounds like they re-wired your mic for low impedance with an XLR connector? And then you're using an impedance matching transformer? Hard to tell from your post. A "low-Z jack with a switchcraft adapter (transformer)" - ain't no such thing. I can help you - here or offline. Feel free to contact me.
If here, a photo might help.
It is possible your mic is setup CORRECTLY now, but was wired for low impedance BEFORE, to the 1/4" jack - in which case you would have gotten slightly lower output to your amp and therefore less feedback.
