Hi All: I am throwing a music party in my studio tonight and am going to video it. We have a dimmer switch on the can lights in the ceiling and my wife loves to bring the brightness down real low. I am all for that but am worried it will kill the video quality. Can I add some lamps to the stage area and or camera lens area and have the room dimly lit and still get a 1/2 way decent product? The camera will be about 15 feet from the performing area. The camera is your basic hand held thing. Thanks! Walter

Your best bet would be to make sure the stage (assuming that's what you want to see on the video) is well lit. If the rest of the room is darker it shouldn't matter too much because (in my experience) most home video cameras focus and adjust for the centre of the frame.
If you light the area close to the lens you will probably end up with under-exposure for the stage area, so I would keep the area around the lens as-is.
To sum up: Light he stage as best as you can, make sure the camera is pointed right at it, and keep your fingers crossed . . .that's what I'd do anyway.
Edit: Nearly forgot to say: look forward to the video Walter!

I wish you were here too. Johnny Roy just left from Ky. He should be here around 8. He has played guitar with the likes of Albert King, koko taylor, roy buchanan(me too!), Bo Diddly. He also teaches classical guitar at the college down there. Mark Rubinstein, who has grammy/platinum credits on engineering and keys is coming too. He has worked with cher, natile cole, grover washington, liza minelli, judy collins, bobby womack. Mark played keys, bass, drums, and accordian with me on many tours back in the mid 80's down in Austin. We haven't played together since so I am real excited. I am waiting to hear from Sean Carney (International Blues Challenge winner). I am really touched that such great musicians are traveling big distances to play with me and there is no money involved. Very moving. Walter ---------- walter tore's spontobeat - a real one man band and over 1 million spontaneously created songs and growing. I record about 300 full length cds a year. Have a good time, can't wait to see and hear the recording.
I would also use a trypod for the camera, just in case you have not thought of it.
Cool deal!

Evan is the last left and is is dying. Sean told me this tonight. Evan and I played together a ton in austin. All my buddies are dying. Life is short. Live it following your dreams. bluesdoc: What does that mean?
Andy: I am mixing the soundtrack right now. It is pretty good so far. This was the first time I played my 1MB setup with another guitarist. It was a challenge because I would hear guitar sounds an sometimes wonder if it was me or Sean playing them. I had to let that go and just try to let it flow. I fly radio control sailplanes off slopes. Sometimes when you are flying with others and everyone is up thousand or so feet in a thermal you can think you are flying your plane when you are following someone elses. Then you freak out and search for your plane, which is often spinning down out of control. That is what happened a bunch. It will be interesting to hear what it sounds like :-) Having a PA set up meant the vocals/harp were coming out the speaker and then being picked up by the recording vocal/harp mic. Basically not as high a quality as I get when I normally record. Also the guitar amp was only a few feet from the vocal mic and both Sean and I were both plugged into the princeton reverb. I had a gibson 335 copy and he had a strat. Both are totally different tone machines so we had to try and find middle ground with the tone settings and on mixing there wasn't much I could do to it. The studio was like a sardine can so space was a real issue but it was a great vibe having it packed like in the good old days! The first set was just Sean and me. The second set we added Johnny Roy. Once I get all the songs mixed I will sync them up with the video and put them on youtube.
