Okay, everybody. I'm listening to Pandora internet radio--I created a Grazin' in the Grass channel--and the following song comes across the netwaves:
"Why Not," by Chris Botti, off the album SLOWING DOWN THE WORLD.
This is my kind of smooth jazz song. I played guitar in a college band called Spiral and we did this kind of stuff. In another life, I would be Larry Carlton crossed with Lee Ritenour.
So I hit the "buy" corner of the song on Pandora and bought it on iTunes. Easy. Quick. Welcome to the postmodern world. Everything is available, almost immediately, for a reasonable price.
Your challenge: download the song and tell me the changes. The melody fits perfectly into 3rd position Bb harp. My 2011 resolution is to translate this sort of stuff--smooth jazz with a blues edge--into my one man band format.
Diggs, you can take the lead on this. You're a jazz guy and will be able to write out these changes, I suspect. I can almost do it by ear, but not quite. I'll need to pull out my guitar and spend 45 minutes getting them right.
So I'd like some help, and I can't imagine a better place to assemble new knowledge quickly than this board.
C'mon, guys. Spend the 99 cents, enjoy the jam, and break down the song.
No, sorry, I can't help with naming the chords. My friend from work could if I played it for him. And I bet Diggs can too.
Reason I'm posting is that I haven't considered myself a fan of smooth jazz, tend to find it dull. But I found this clip on youtube of Why Not and really dug it! Would be cool to hear a harmonica rendition :) .

I had a hard time with this one and the result below is odd...
I listened to carefully the bass and tried to figure what note he played. That was "easy" until 0:40. After it becomes hard. I'm not sure with the time signature too because the horn play always before chord changes...
I wrote the chords in the software "Band in The Box" and here is the result (DON'T FORGET TO LISTEN TO THE AUDIO FILE BELOW THE HUGE PICTURE)...
I have tested different chords (major, minor, 7th) and different styles to be as close as the song but...HAHAHA!!!
Yesterday night I have seen these guys below playing... I'm sure they would know about chord changes. They play Funk jazz. I had the chance to play with the pianist (in a blues context). I couldn't keep on more than 30 second with them but I like their music because it stays groovy:
