I am really not trying to spam the site or take up tons of bandwith or whore myself out, but I made some changes to my Custom Harmonicas page that will take effect February 1st. I only even bring this up as to not blindside anyone waiting until February or so to order with the current prices and options.
These changes were based off of initial demand, recently coming up with a Marine Band model that utilized the science of the Sjoeberg combs, increased labor in the higher levels, and the want to very much focus on the Level 4 harmonicas.
The turn around for Level 1 harmonicas is very fast. The others depend on a number of factors, so please contact me off-list.
I specialize in overblow/overdraw harmonicas, but provide options for excellent non-ob harps as well. I have been VERY hesitant to mention anything directly about public building on this forum as it is often a highly heated topic starter. My intent isn't to solicit business, start a conversation on customization or the benefits thereof, argue what techniques are superior, toss around feelings about pricing, etc.
Honestly, I just now I've been contacted by people on the forum here and I didn't want the changes to frustrate people. I want to provide the best service that I can and feel that devoting extra time to the high end harps is worth the final results. I am also hoping to generate the means to become a direct supplier for Sjoeberg combs and some other products. (I should also note I am trying to balance a full-time job, two children, grad school, and gigging while trying to start a small business, so time and resources are slim)
I am more than happy to talk harp shop in private via email or phone.
Thanks! ---------- Mike Quicksilver Harmonicas

i actually went to your site yesterday. it is a nice site. you give the customer many options.
a suggestion concerning your time demand issues- sell the kids while they still have a good value. the older they get, the more the demand and selling price drop.

LOL! I am actually home with a sick 8month old today. She is the cutest thing ever! What is nice is I can work when they go to sleep. It is much quieter than jamming. My son loves to sit next to me with his tools or Play Doh and pretend to be working with me.
Thanks for the kind words. ---------- Mike Quicksilver Harmonicas

The number of times I joked to my kids that I'd listed them on ebay - I'm amazed I never got a phonecall from social services!
I sat with my eldest (6), cleaning a gunked up harp with isoprop today. He was really interested. He's already started playing - I can't wait to teach him all the other stuff.
Anyway it's a nice site Mike. I'm not a custom player myself, but good luck with the business.

Mike,
Your site says you can make a harp overblow the 1,2,3,4,5 and 6.
I never knew that was possible!
Do you use reeds from other harps and set them up like that? This is very interesting. ---------- ---Go Chicago Bears!!!---

Miles,
http://archive.harmonicasessions.com/dec04/overbends.html
Holes 1-6 can overblow. Holes 7-10 can overdraw. Personally, other than occasionally using the 1 ob, I don't ob 2 and 3 when I play. I can do it, but I haven't found reason to use them musically, lol.
I know when setting up harps for Clint Hoover, he really wanted to ob 2 and 3, but even he was doing it more for mastering the technical skill than trying to use those notes in place of playing them more traditionally.
I've wrestled with the wording of that because there are some keys where the harp is so low it is almost impossible to ob even with excellent technique.
I guess I am gambling that not too many people will use a 2ob on a Low D or something. ;)
Regarding learning the lower obs, the one on a D harp is usually really easy for me, YMMV. I can hit the 1ob as a passing note in standard keys, but will admit to not being able to really kill it like some others can. ---------- Mike Quicksilver Harmonicas

What's trickier than obing down on the lower holes is getting the harp to overdraw and go back to a standard note with no lag (assuming you hit the high end similar to the middle of the harp like I tend to do).
For example, bending the 7od and resolving on the 7 draw or quick slurring up to the 8 draw...which is very handy in blues. It takes some patience to find that balance to where the od is easy, but it doesn't choke the reed for an instant.

Damn Mike........ I just listened to some bits you have on YouTube...
Holy cow man.... The one where you play 3rd position and switch to 2nd Position C is the shit! I never got into Chris' playing. Your playing is a little hipper and Ricci-esque.
