Any lesson from a master is worth talking about but I am wondering how George was able to mentor/teach Clarke, Piazza and Wilson. Was he more of a mentor, encouraging great potential or was he more of a "do this" teacher?

I met Smith once for more than the fleeting howdy. It was around a table at a lounge following a show in SoCal. While he wasn't actually "teaching" he was essentially 'holding court' with a few of us hanging on his words. So, this is only an observation. He struck me as more of a demonstrate, allow parroting, and offer some short and sweet words of encouragement kind of guy. Of course, this was in a club context, and a few years after Clarke, Piazza and Wilson had no doubt sucked every trace of marrow out of his technique. He may have merely been tolerant. At the time, I wasted an opportunity. I was all-ten-hole-all-the-time, and couldn't be bothered with chromatic. Yes, I was a young idiot. I'm an older idiot now.

I've never met George, but a friend of mine here in boston had told me that when he was on a night off from gigging, he saw George and during a conversation, George had personally offered to give him lessons and let him stay at his place in LA, but he turned the offer down. When he told me about it, I said "What???? Are you an idiot?? I'd be on a plane the very next day just to get a chance to learn from a true master like that!!" George not only played blues on a chromatic in 3rd postion, but in 1st position as well.

I love his Blues in 1st position. Boogie'n with George (Sp?)is the basis of my 1st position chromatic blues style.

From what I've read and heard from Rod and other guys in my LA days George wouldn't necessarily "show" you how to do something, he'd MAKE you do something. Somewhere Rod talks about playing on stage and George coming up behind him and squeezing both of Rod's hands tighter around the mic and harp to improve his tone.
