Thought it would be a good idea to list tunes that can be played in 3rd Position.

Please add any that you may know. There must be many that we are not all aware of.

Scarborough Fair

Greensleeves

Rising Sun

St James Infirmary

Summertime

"Don't Go No Further" (Mojo Buford version). He's playing a C chromatic in D minor but a C diatonic also works well on that song.

Nearly all blues tunes with chromatic on them are in 3rd and can be played on the diatonic in 3rd too.

eg Rod Piazza, William Clarke

Why don't you leave some holes when you play, and maybe some music will fall out.

I like playing 3rd position on The Thrill Is Gone.

Sometimes if the band gives me an extra break, I switch to 3rd on Stormy Monday.

Ain't No Sunshine is awesome in 3rd.

I've been jamming with a band that plays the theme from True Blood. I think its called Bad Things. 3rd works well here too.

Not blues, but this is Use Me by Bill Withers. I play it in 3rd(C harp). We play the tune in D. I've posted this before, but it's appropriate:

Question--are there certain types of blues that should NOT be played in 3rd, or can it be widely used?

I had decided to get serious about learning 3rd position over the weekend and figured out blues scale in 3rd position along with other noodling. Would like to know if harpers ever just play traditional 2nd position tunes in 3rd. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Great post, I'm going to work on some of these songs.

Non-blues song contribution to the list--Moondance

Even though Butterfield played it cross, Work Song lays in 3rd just fine.

@Hollistonharper – I have found that you can play 3rd position over many major blues progressions. My theory is not not great, but from what understand you can get away with playing minor scales over major progressions but not the other way around (please correct me if I'm wrong).

3rd position over some major progressions can give you a nice sort of jazzy feel. It doesn't always work well, but try it out on some jam tracks.
