The Hohner Roadhouse JT30 for $60 is a thing of the past. You can't find them anymore. The best price I can find on this type of mic is this. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180528185185&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
Musician's Friend says Roadhouse mics are due 1/25. The hohner blues blaster is available for $85 at Amazon - also a possibility. Same shell as the Roadhouse so equally modifiable in the future. Same cheap crystal element so acceptable but not outstanding tone out of the box.
The mic your link points to may look similar but it is not. That same mic is marketed under other names, such as the Bushman Torpedo. It is a low impedance mic. Inside that big shell is a small cheap modern dynamic element surrounded by air. It definitely does not have great tone. It IS a good shell to mod. You can fit a good CM or CR in there and block the vent holes with the gasket such that the sound pressure waves pass from the front to behind the element easily when uncupped but not when cupped - which in turn leads to deeper than usual "wah" effects. But as a mic off the shelf? Fuggedaboudit.
i totally concur Greg. i'm happy to say i got a torpedo for a deal- $50 when bushman closed them out a couple years ago. i have yet to try and element swaps with it but as it sits it's a substandard(my standards!) mic. i have considered swapping to a sm57 or 58 element so as to have a good low-z mic to plug into a p.a. from time to time.
jbone - don't bother - you can't cup it! - too much empty space inside. You're better off with a stock SM57 - perhaps with Bulletizer if you don't like cupping stick mics. ---------- /Greg
