Blues player trying to fit in with my weekend warrior band on non-blues tunes - work in progress (ain't it all!).

This is Midnight Special in the key of D major - I'm playing in 2nd (bullet mic into HG2 amp miced + lone wolf delay pedal, G harp). Again, just trying to tastefully enhance the tune and 'fit' harp into a basically non-harp song (ps.they did throw me an unexpected solo).

Suggestions & harp-coaching very welcome!! Sorry for no video. (Song ends around 4:45 - dead air after...)

Thank you.

Hi Barry - I used to play that song in a band in the early/mid 90s, the same basic arrangement but a bit faster. I could probably dig out a recording of ours with some amaturish harp on it if you'd like some ideas.

I liked your version, the vocalist really nails it as well. The harp is good though I think that you could punctuate the song a bit more. Make sure that your timing is tight- you're a little sloppy in one or two places, like the riff is more of an afterthought

Other tips would be to work on your double-step 3 draw bend- this is a very major song so the 2nd note of the scale is useful, but tricky to hit on a low harp. And avoid bending the 5 draw unless you really mean too.

I used to add some trills during the intro too

If you're curious about that recording email j_daniell "at" hotmail.com.

i do this with the wife in our duo. she plays in D, i play 3rd in C. i don't take a solo at all. it's a starker version, just guitar, her vocs, and my harp as almost a percussion part. kind of dat DAH dat dah. repeated throughout. i also back her on the chorus. sort of similar to what john fogarty was doing in creedence.
interesting take on it Barry!

Thanks all for the tips -

I think GamblersHand really nailed my weak spots for sure i felt sloppy on a few spots (the kind of 'mud' you hope audience doesn't notice) - i think i wanted to change the riff but my mind didn't work fast enuff. Also I do find it tricky to nicely hit the 3-draw blue note on a low harp, so that's good advice as well.

Anyhow, my first in-action post, was pretty nervous to put it out there - but now glad I did & really appreciate the input!!
