Well, my first time playing with a band was the other night at an open mic (if ya read the thread). They just played one of their songs and I just played along. Well, I've been practicing and playing for my own enjoyment for around 2 years. The lead dude threw it to me for a solo which I had fun with. But looking back I remember the guy waving me off at one point. It was the point in the song where the audience was supposed to sing. I didn't know the song I was caught up in the groove and just playing like they were there for me haha.
I was laughing about that today because I remember reading a joke many moons ago here on the board. Something like how many harmonica players does it take to screw in a light bulb? None because they'll just steal someone else's light.
I got a laugh out of that because I got it then, but never REALLY understood it until now.
---------- Be safe, keep the faith, and don't let em tearrrrrr ya down.

Well done on your first gig, I've only been at the moothie for a short while and no gigs on the horizon, but i imagine it must be quite some feeling in the limelight, I get carried away in my own kitchen when I'm practicing :o)

I've been messing with the harp for more than 30 years and steal the spotlight every chance I can get! They call me Gus! At jams you are often going to sit in on songs you are unfamiliar with, listen for opportunities to add your fill and pay attention to the lead. The cardinal rule is to never play over the singer or the guitar players solo. Waiting for the crowds' break is new one to me. LOL

.....Any time there is more than one performer, you are a team with some common entertainment goal. The person who seems to be able to do what the audience likes best is the "center". It isn't always easy to know this at a jam but if it was Bonnis Raitt, you would know. ;) Make sure your "Spidey-sense" is on. ----------
