THIS IS AN UPDATE TO AN OLD POST

However it is now a before and after (2 years).
There are two videos below. One is 2010 and the last one was a few days ago..same song. This is part of my blues journey.

Both would be a lot to sit through...the harp starts around 2:20. Comment if you like.

ORIGINAL POST

Hi all, this weekend was my birthday and I was home practicing and thought I would record a song that I have been messin’ with. Mostly to hear how I really sound as opposed to what I think I sound like.

Anyway, I had a thought that this form needs more people to post videos of their playing. I would like to suggest that all members should try to post a video on their birthday. I get a kick out of watching most videos on this form regardless of the talent level, and I have not posted a video before so here it is.

This was not practiced or meant to be anything but an example of me singing...errr well sort of singing....and playing harp. To spare yourself some of the singing, jump ahead to around 1:50.

Note that the recording was with a small point and shoot camera. I am playing an A Suzuki blues master, though a vintage green bullet and a fender blues Jr.

If you care to add a comment, I have one question that I would like for you to answer:
Would you recommend that I play this at a local small town blues jam or would you recommend that I stay home and practice?

Hey, from my perspective it's all good to me. If you got the cojones to post a vid of yourself on this forum, then you get 'em to hit up a local blues jam. (open mic night)

A great post for #100. (post number, not birthday)lol.

Go ahead and play the blues if it'll make you happy.

Have you been to that jam before - to listen ? What level are the players at on average? A jam can be anything from a bunch of newbies to seasoned local pros getting together on a weeknight when they don't have other gigs.

Try to honestly elvaluate how you 'stack up' to the level of talent there.
Then - if getting onstage wouldn't embarres you - go for it.

Then again -
GK Chesterton said "the reason angels can fly is they take themselves lightly" - so go ahead, - stretch your wings

I'll second what Bonedog said - depends on the jam. I can't stand it when people blow smoke - you asked, so I'll tell you. Congratulations for doing this. You're ready for the kind of jam that is open to all. You're not ready for the "pro jam" type jam. Need to work on flatting that 3rd in your harp playing, and use a few more of dem holes. On your singing work on pitch control. But that is meant constructively. There is no better way to encourage yourself that to go to jams. Part of the whole game is courage, after all. DO GO - I mean it when I say you're ready for the "open to all" class jam - and going will accelerate your learning. It is helpful to have a teacher around this time too....

Thanks for the comments

@reedsqueal yes I wanted to do something for my 100th.

@Greg I agree with what you said about pitch in the singing. Singing is something I have only started to do in the past few months... mainly to help me remember the structure of songs, and yes.... I didn't quite get that darn blue third working as good as it should.

As for more holes...I am basically copying (or attempting to copy) what Mick Jagger is playing in the song. It sounds better when I play this in a jam situation with other instruments.

A teacher would be good at this point but I would guess there is none within 500km of me and I'm not sure if I would like an "e-teacher". Adams lessons for now.

Good job & Happy Birthday~~

congrats on your first video! I thought you did a good job. Please keep posting...don't wait until your next birthday :-)

As for the jam situation, I agree with Bonedog and Greg. I attend both open and pro jams and there can be an enormous difference in quality.

I would definitely encourage you to start at an open jam (I believe you're ready for it). You'll meet people who, later on, can introduce you to more professional jams. That's how it worked for me. I went to my first open jam about 2 or 3 months ago and now I'll be hosting a pro-jam session in February 2011.

so I say: go, go , go

I once had a good guitar teacher who said: "An hour of performance is worth 100 hours of practice." I'd say go to the jam and give it hell--You'll learn a lot.

If it's a pro level jam--just find an open mic and go to it--you are definitely ready for some level of performance. . .

I thought someone might bring that up. Yes I have no good excuses for the the next BYBO other than as a beginner it is hard to put yourself out in front of the many talented MBH members ...I did look at all the videos and voted however.

I still think posting a video on (or near) your birthday might give some people a milestone to aim for.
