Anyone use an old phone element (specifically the receiver or what would be the listening element) as a harp mic? Sounds like something off an old Sonny Terry cut.

Here's a company that sells them (samples with harp), of course you could make one for way less, wayyyyy less. ;)

I don't think this is an old phone element as it is described as a "passive dynamic element". Old phones used carbon granule microphones and required a current going through the mic to work.

It MIGHT use a not-quite-so-old phone's speaker, which can be used as a mic although I've never tried it.

The "Carbonphone" which isn't available yet may well use a true carbon granule mic.

(That doesn't mean this is a good or bad mic at all. It looks cool and sounds decent from the samples.)

Yep, the receiver not the transmitting element. You would have to power the transmitting element (I've seen people do it. I think with a 1.5V battery?) and I've heard the receiver sounds pretty cool by comparison.

I've seen some live "indie" band shows where the singer is singing into the wrong end of an old phone receiver. I think that's where this company got the idea. Someone over there must blow harp for them to have a "harp mic" in the lineup I would think?

In Argentina, a local harp mics builder builds them with old telephone elements

here is a sample

The sound is convincing, but of course you can compare it with a CM, or ceramic element by that matter.

^Very cool. I like what he's doing at 0:39 in this one. Sounds great. Might also have to do with his enclosure he's using? He's just using a 1/4" jack?

I don't care what he's playing out of. He would sound good playing into a cup with a string attached to another cup. The guy is obviously a very technically skilled player with excellent control.

He's got a couple of licks I am going to try and learn. Cool stuff, Camilo!
