All:

I've just send the following email to a couple of people in Amsterdam: Bob Koenders, who will be driving me around during my brief tour, and Vincent van Wijk. Bottom line: I'm only bringing the HG2 with me, and need a second small amp while I'm in Europe. If you think you can address this request, please contact Bob Koenders: bob@deltavliegschool.nl

Thanks! Here's the emailed request:

After packing my bags and checking carefully through the baggage policies of my airline, Continental Airlines, I discovered that my plan of bringing along TWO small amps--one in my big checked bag, one as a carry-on--won't work. My big bag would have been charged an extra $50 for being too heavy (68 pounds) and an additional $100 for being too large (length + height + depth). So I've decided to bring ONLY my HarpGear 2 as a carry on, and to leave my little Kay 703 at home.

This means that I definitely need somebody on your end to provide me with a second small amp. Since the Netherlands seems to be crawling with harmonica players, I don't think this will cause too much of a problem! And of course I'll give the supplier a free CD, autographed with great gratitude.

The ideal amp would be small: certainly less than 10 watts, and more like 5 watts. A practice amp, really. If anybody has a Kay 703 or a small Premier, that's great. An Epiphone Valve Jr. would work well, too. The amp must have an 8" speaker, or at most two 8" speakers. I want to avoid larger speakers at all cost. I like small amps that overload easily.

The worst possible amp would be a 4 x 10". Also, I don't believe that a Marble Tone with one 8" will work for me. I tried Ben Bouman's back in 2008 and I just couldn't get my sound with it.

I think it would be cool if you could get a chance to play an Alligator amp while you're over there.

Adam, Hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs.

But you do know the voltage is 230v in Europe.
Can you switch your Harpgear to that ? If not you'll need a transformer.

.....My late father's European voltage joke: "Did you hear about the amateur radio operator who plugged his receiver into a 230v outlet? He heard Glasgow!"

7Limit: I've got three voltage converters. A man gets to the age of 52, he travels to Europe more than a dozen times over the years, he learns things.

I've got a fender champ 600 that I've modified myself, and it sounds great. It has a 10" eminence alnico speaker in it, and it gets some beautiful crunch pretty easily. It would siut your sound well. The only issue would be getting it from germany to Amsterdam (about a 3 hour drive). I'll contact Bob Koenders anyway and let him know that it's available if you need it. I'm actually really close to Münster, where your show on Friday is.

About the trip - any chance to expand the trip to Finland if suitable forum of co-operation will be found?

EDIT: I took a look at the calendar, seems that the trip is fully booked, but in your next European tour we could try to organize something on the scandinavia too...

Ben Bouman came through: a gorgeous old Masco, about the size of a Champ. I want that amp! I will have a great sound for the tour, thanks to Ben.

I'm doing four events in three countries in four days. There was no time to add Finland--or Sweden, or Portugal, or the many other places from which people have generously invited me. This is a self-financed tour, heavily leveraged (The airfare + second airfare from Munster to Copenhagen + baggage overage + parking in Memphis total $1500 alone, not to mention any expenses I incur on the ground in Europe), and I simply wasn't able to add any more dates.
