If someone were to ask me what makes a blues riff, I could answer in VERY BASIC (and incomplete) terms that it's notes from the blues scale played with a shuffle. That might be a good enough answer for some people, I guess.

That's the kind of answer I'm looking for:
What makes a rock 'n' roll riff?

You know it (blues or rock) when you hear it, but how do you define it?

I think the best answer wold be: It's played while a drummer is playing a rock beat. Also, swinging would stereotypically be less common.
