I really like this song written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. It's been covered by so many artists, most famously by Nina Simone and more recently by Muse. It's a great number to play on harp. I'm playing my short arrangement on a Suzuki Promaster 350V in C, thru a Green Bullet 520DX and Vox DA5 with delay and Blues 2 setting.
Love the song and even play in a joint where Nina has hung out and sang in her past owned by Ashford & Simpson. I rarely ask riff questions as I have a kind of harp apahsia/dyslexia when it comes to replicating others stuff but at 40 sec is that just a typical draw bend on the 3 recycled over and over because although it sounds simple I'm not getting your bend tone (and also realizing the bend responsiveness on my 3 hole is lousy on my myriad GM's). Anyway- I like the soul ballad influence. d ---------- myspacefacebook
Thanks D. Love the Nina Simone connection. Now that would be some venue to play this song!!
Yep you're right about the recycled 3 draw bend (semi-tone)and it certainly does help to have a non-leaky draw hole 3.
Do you play GM's exclusively btw, because although I didn't use it on this piece, I am really loving the sound of GM's lately. When I posted this vid I mistakenly typed GM instead of the Suzuki Promaster 350V I actually used. I did an EDIT to correct this.
Yup. GM's...... I play on one of the most evocative songs (sung by Nina) in the universe: "Four Woman" often. I do this a soloist with a singer rather than note for note as you often do. When we do this great tune Valerie Simpson (wrote for Marvin and Chaka, etc) plays piano on it. One of the stories she tells is how the last time N. Simone was at her club (the Sugar Bar- where I'm a hired regular)Nina sang a Prince song. Versatile woman! d ---------- myspacefacebook
D - I hadn't heard the song 'Four Women' before and its amazingly powerful, it gave me the chills. I found a great live version by Nina on Youtube but have posted this recorded version as it has the lyrics. Have you got a version of you playing this cos I'd like to hear it.
Great version you've got here - definitely going to have to learn this. And thanks too to bigd for the 'four women' reference - I hadn't heard that either.
