I wanted to start focusing a bit more on timing incorporating chugging. Any suggestions for cool licks or songs to learn? Resources, ideas etc.

(I'm going through a SBW phase - Bye Bye Bird has got it's hook in me)

Go ahead and play the blues if it'll make you happy.

Jimmy Reed is a great study in the hypnosis of a perfect groove-which I see as the point of what people call chugging. Sparse, less is more, chords that are ABSOLUTELY best accomplished with tongue blocking. To that I shall fight to the death.

Whatever!

Big Walter, Little Walter, Snooky Pryor and James Cotton all do a nice job of this setting up shuffles. Quite often they alternate between the two draw and three blow to help set the rhythm without running out of air. Most of those guys played in the streets, so being able to play in a support role and carrying the rhythm was important. Listen to the older guys that played in the 40's and 50's.
