Some of y'all that customize, build or work on amps might can answer this for me. What's the best, cheapest, safest means of shipping an amp. Not talking about the packaging but the shipper. I'm figuring 60 pounds or so and UPS looks like $150 or more! Thanks in advance.

I use UPS-your amp is insured, and at least at my location,I helped the guy who was packing it-removing the tubes and wrapping them, inserting bubble wrap and packing it inside the amp-the guy said he had shipped plenty of amps before-this was no small task-I shipped a Fender Bassman from Florida to California. Your going to have to pay upwards of $100.00,but I got my shipping expenses covered by the buyer. Thomas Fiacco III

I've used mostly UPS. 60lbs is heavy. I shipped a Bassman RI that weighed less than that.
It is a good idea to double box the amp. Meaning, pull the tubes and bubble wrap them. Tape them to the inside of the amp. Use paper, peanuts, bubble wrap, or such to pad the amp. Put it in box 1. Then put that in box two and fill with packing material.
I've often torn apart cardboard boxes to be the packing material between box one and two. That is my preferred method, anyways. I can get the boxes for free at work. Try to have around an inch or two of padding in each box.
Remember, with box one, it can look like crap as its only really purpose is to 1.) add a layer of protection if the outer box gets punctured and 2.) hold the packing materials in place around the amp.
Oh yeah, I usually put the amp (or whatever other large item) in a plastic bag...that way it stays clean and if you use peanuts or such, they stay out of the amp.
I always try to figure in some sort of shipping with the cost of buying the amp. UPS ground is the cheapest option, but due to size and weight, amps ship for a lot of money. I am pretty sure the Bassman cost about $100 to ship (plus some materials).
Something like a Champ or 1x12 cab should ship for under $75. It is the size of the box that really makes things spendy!
Every time I've tried to estimate it online, the actual cost has always been way different.

I've sold and shipped a few. The largest was a Peavey Session 500, a monster. UPS got it to AZ from FLA witout a hitch. If you know someone with an account it'll cost less.

I shipped a Mini Meat using Fed Ex Ground. They were cheaper than UPS and I used them to pack it, too.

I just ordered a HG2 amp. from Brian at Harp Gear. The shipping from Florida to Texas was $53. Not sure about the weight. Brian said it's usually the size that cost more unless it's really heavy. Mike
