In another thread, Steve_J asked the question:

"Are the only harps available /{stock w/ JI tuning ,,} the souls voice & 1923? "

A few other examples were mentioned, but there seemed to be confusion about the Soul's Voice tuning scheme.

I was always under the impression that the SV (made by Seydel) was a compromise tuning

See here for a description of the Soul's Voice's temperament by two experts, Ben Bouman and Pat Missin:

http://www.harp-l.org/pipermail/harp-l/2004-September/msg00816.htm

So this would infer that at least up until 2004 this was indeed the case.

However the description at Rockin Ron's says:

"The rich, mellow tone of the Soul's Voice is partly due to the fact that it's Just Tuned like the legendary, old Marine Bands"

Can anyone else shed any light on this? Has the tuning actually changed (there's a gap in the market and it wouldn't be the first time a manufacturer has altered a tuning) or is Rockin Ron's site incorrect. (I cannot believe that Pat Missin or Ben Bouman would be mistaken on this)

The comprimise tuning on the SV is the same one that's used on nearly all Seydel harps. What it basically is that the tuning is nearly identitical with 19LJI, and the only difference between the Seydel comprimise tuning and 19LJI is where 5 & 9 draw is tuned. In 19LJI, 5 & 9 draw is tuned 1.5 cents sharp, wheras the Seydel comprimise has those two tuned 2 cents flat. Essentially, that's the only real difference. However, the pre-1985 MB/Sp20/BH and Seydel prior to 2004 were tuned to 7LJI, and the difference is where 5 & 9 draw are tuned and in 7LJI, those two notes are tuned 29 cents flat.

I've seen about a hundred Seydels, three SVs, and one Weltmeister Blackbird (that it same as SV - only with covers painted differently)

All tuned the same plus/minus detuning due to age.
